Broward Health Medical Center, based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was declared a statutory teaching hospital by the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration, according to a Broward Health statement.

BHMC, a public hospital, qualifies as a statutory teaching hospital by training at least 100 full-time equivalent resident physicians across a minimum of seven different graduate medical education programs. The designation recognizes the work BHMC put into expanding its Graduate Medical Education program.

With an expanded internal medicine program, new pediatrics and geriatrics programs and the addition of a cardiology fellowship, the GME program has almost doubled the number of residents in training at BHMC since 2010. In the last nine years, BHMC's GME program has graduated more than 200 residents, more than 60 percent of which are now practicing physicians in the state of Florida, according to the statement.

"To be recognized at the state level with an AHCA designation validates our committee's efforts to foster expansion and growth and ensure we're meeting the evolving healthcare needs of our population," said Natasha Bray, DO, vice president, designated institutional officer and director of Graduate Medical Education at BHMC.

BHMC is part of the Broward Health system, one of the largest public health systems in the country, also based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
