A study led by Viviana Greco, PhD and published in the journal Sleep (—> https://lnkd.in/gE4zEPUY ) suggests that the simple act of wearing an eye mask to block out light while sleeping can improve cognitive function the next day. Researchers discovered that wearing eye masks while sleeping improved participants' attentiveness and episodic memory encoding the next day. Good sleep is essential for the proper operation of our bodies and minds, as sleep studies keep showing. For example, too little sleep or a lack of quality sleep can negatively impact our alertness during daily activities. Studies also demonstrate that one driver of disrupted sleep is ambient light. The earth's cycle of light and dark controls our sleep-wake cycle, with morning sunlight alerting us to wakefulness and evening darkness urging us to sleep. But sunlight is not the only source of light that can impact our sleep - ambient sources of light like streetlights and light from electronics can also reach our retinas and affect our sleep. Greco and her colleagues conducted two experiments to explore how wearing an eye mask that blocks ambient light during sleep might impact cognitive performance. The research team sought to determine the impact of eye masks on regular sleep at home, despite research indicating that they may help patients in intensive care units sleep better. The results replicated the finding from the experiment, where participants showed better learning performance on the paired associative learning task after wearing the eye mask. Interestingly, participant sleep diaries did not reveal any differences in hours of sleep or self-rated sleep quality between the eye mask or control conditions. The results did reveal, however, that better learning performance after wearing the mask was associated with longer slow wave sleep time. Thus, memory improvements after mask-wearing were predicted by time spent in slow wave sleep. According to the synaptic homeostasis hypothesis, slow wave activity restores the brain’s ability to encode new information by downscaling synapses that have been strengthened during waking hours. Though their study was unable to measure this, the researchers suggest that the eye masks may have led to increased slow wave activity. According to the authors, there are practical consequences for the study's findings, especially since driving a car is one of the many daily jobs that demands alertness and quick thinking. My takeaways: Wearing an eye mask overnight can be an effective and inexpensive solution for improving and benefit cognitive performance. Researchers from the UESTC have proposed a new method to speed up LLM inference called Adaptive N-gram Parallel Decoding (ANPD). ANPD achieves this by generating multiple tokens concurrently through a two-phase approach: an initial rapid drafting phase utilizing an N-gram module that adjusts based on the context, and a subsequent verification phase where the original LLM assesses the suggested tokens. This technique ensures the LLM's output remains intact while significantly improving processing speed.   The adaptability of ANPD, which does not require retraining or extra GPU memory, positions it as an effective tool for expediting LLM inference. The implementation of a multi-level architecture within the N-gram module increases the accuracy of the initial drafts, thereby minimizing inference latency. Tests conducted with models such as LLaMA have shown speed enhancements of up to 3.67 times, indicating ANPD's capacity to transform LLM inference by making it quicker and more resource-efficient. This method capitalizes on the structured nature of language to efficiently predict the next token, proving especially beneficial for tasks that involve straightforward phrases and paragraphs.   The research underscores the shortcomings of current model compression and speculative decoding techniques, which typically necessitate changes to the model's architecture and retraining. In contrast, ANPD introduces a method of acceleration that is lossless, maintaining the quality of the model's output without requiring significant computational resources. Additionally, the study presents a Multi-Level N-gram (MLN) algorithm designed to improve the accuracy of draft outputs, thus boosting the overall efficiency of the acceleration process.   The findings of this research have significant implications, offering a route to more effective use of LLMs across various applications. By drastically reducing inference latency without compromising the quality of output, ANPD facilitates wider adoption and more creative applications of larger LLMs on smaller hardware. "Don't work on LLM. This is in the hands of large companies, there's nothing you can bring to the table." -- Unfortunately, I believe that LeCun is correct.. The omniscient nature of LLMs makes this reality extremely concerning if you take this to one rational (potential) conclusion: large tech companies own the big LLMs and 0% chance of any small outfit entering the space given the cost to train a competitive LLM ---> LLMs can be applied to any sector/subject domain ---> a handful of big tech companies eventually dominate all sectors Just a thought-experiment and I tend to be much more optimistic than most, but I have been concerned about the potential for this for quite a while.. 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐊𝐈𝐍’ 𝐓𝐇𝐔𝐑𝐒𝐃𝐀𝐘: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐡𝐲 + 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬 Researchers at UCLA examining goal-directed behavior used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to scan and record the brain activity of study subjects as they watched videos of people performing routine activities, such as browsing the Web, lifting weights, and brushing their teeth. Participants were asked both HOW and WHY people typically perform each action. For the HOW questions, the participants were told to think of one necessary part of performing the action; for the WHY questions, they were told to think of one plausible motive for performing the action. Here’s the thing: the HOW and the WHY lit up completely different parts of the brain! HOW thinking engaged the left brain circuitry, while WHY thinking engaged right brain circuitry. AND…the results indicate an inverse relation between the two circuits, meaning when one is on the other is off! That’s significant because decades of behavioral research is clear that a well-structured goal requires a HOW as well as a WHY for whole-brain engagement and eventual achievement, and it is important to maintain a connection between both. BUT trying to focus on both HOW and WHY simultaneously can work against us. That wouldn’t be a huge problem if not for the fact that when we’re faced with a difficult challenge and our momentum begins to stall, we do just that: we question both HOW and WHY we are pursuing the goal. And that can make us disengage entirely. Good news: there’s a fix. It’s called Why-How Laddering. WHY is the higher order question of purpose. HOW is the lower order question of process. If your HOW isn’t yielding the desired progress, you can ladder up to ask yourself WHY things aren’t working. If the WHY isn’t as clear as it could be, you can ladder down to ask HOW questions until you find something you can accomplish to get a quick win and restart your progress toward the WHY.
