“Nipun is one of the best managers I ever worked with. He is the mentor of me, and a role model for me. He is very knowledgeable, with even every details of the product in his mind. He is very sharp, with keen insights in all areas he owned. He is very smart, with things done efficiently and quickly. He is very hardworking, but in a way that balances work and life perfectly. He is very ambitious, in a way that I have great faith in him. As a manager, he encourages his reports to take initiative and take responsibilities, and would support his team to try out things they want to do and very supportive of their personal growth. I do treasure the opportunity to work with Nipun, and really appreciate the suggestions and advice he provided to me. ”

Mechanisms of Network Shrinkage Due to Stress
MORS Symposium
In this paper we model a specific type of network shrinkage that appears to occur in real-world networks, namely the sudden disintegration of edges following some initial stress. We hypothesize that the behavior underlying this type of network shrinkage is triadic disruption, which has a cascading effect through a network. We propose three probabilistic and three deterministic mechanisms to model this behavior. We evaluate the performance of the mechanisms on Erdos-Renyi and power-law generated…

We hypothesize that the behavior underlying this type of network shrinkage is triadic disruption, which has a cascading effect through a network. We propose three probabilistic and three deterministic mechanisms to model this behavior. We evaluate the performance of the mechanisms on Erdos-Renyi and power-law generated networks as well as three real-world networks, and identify as the best performer a probabilistic mechanism whose probability of edge disruption decreases exponentially with distance from the initial stress.

Privacy Challenges in Patient-Centric Health Information Systems
USENIX HealthSec 2010 conference
Patient Health Record (PHR) systems offer great promise but raise significant philosophical, cultural, legal, and technical challenges. In hopes of furthering debate on key issues, we explain some central questions about the role, purpose,
and policies associated with these systems. We also propose a framework for addressing policy questions and candidate technology that we believe may sharpen policy discussion and allow PHR systems to adhere to policies they adopt.Other authorsSee publication -
Improving Time-Frequency Sparsity for Audio Spatialization by Time-Adaptive Windowing
National Conference on Communications, IIT Madras
We propose a new time-adaptive windowing technique to obtain a sparse time-frequency representation for audio signals. This transformation helps in providing better source separation from stereo mixtures for improved subsequent spatial rendering over headphones. We start with standard stereo audio recordings, transform them to a sparse representation and then estimate the
mixing parameters to be used for source separation. The performance of the new representation is compared with existing…We propose a new time-adaptive windowing technique to obtain a sparse time-frequency representation for audio signals. test dataset of multi-speaker stereo mixtures.Other authors -

Design and Implementation of a 3-DOF Optical Precision Sensor Integrated in Micro-Robots
IEEE, Design & Technology of Integrated Systems International Conference
This paper proposes a low cost and small design of 3 Degrees of Freedom (3-DOF) sensors. The main objective of these sensors is to measure precisely the absolute position X,Y and theta_z with a high resolutions. The principle of this design relies on a target with a specific periodic pattern with absolute position information encoded in it. Compact 3-Degrees of freedom absolute position sensor based on a CCD chip
SPIE, International Symposium on Optomechatronic Technologies (ISOT)
In this paper, we present a new concept of 3 Degrees Of Freedom (3-DOF) sensors, which are capable of measuring the absolute position X-Y with a resolution less than 0.16µm (defined here as 4sigma and sigma denotes the standard deviation) and the orientation thetaz (over 360°) with a resolution of 0.48'. The principle of this low-cost and small-size 3-DOF sensor relies on a target with a specific pattern that includes periodic absolute position information that can be used to enhance the…
In this paper, we present a new concept of 3 Degrees Of Freedom (3-DOF) sensors, which are capable of measuring the absolute position X-Y with a resolution less than 0.16µm (defined here as 4sigma and sigma denotes the standard deviation) and the orientation thetaz (over 360°) with a resolution of 0.48'. The principle of this low-cost and small-size 3-DOF sensor relies on a target with a specific pattern that includes periodic absolute position information that can be used to enhance the position resolution by statistical analysis. Efficient image processing algorithms are applied to improve both the reliability and the resolution of the target positioning and are optimized in term of processing complexity (i.e., time of processing).

LinkedIn Mobile Endorsements
Endorse connections from LinkedIn mobile: Endorsements give you a quick way to find someone’s top talents based on skills their connections have endorsed. With endorsements on mobile, you can keep your professional reputation fresh by accepting endorsements from your connections and by adding skills to your profile. In addition, you can recognize your connections for being awesome at what they do by endorsing them from your phone.

Skill & Expertise Endorsements
Interface design incorporating social proof and a light weight endorsement action to Profile Skills. This feature leveraged earlier work on Profile Guided Editing, and used the same guided UI to suggest skill endorsements to profile viewers. Recipients of the endorsement receive an email and on-site notification, with a landing experience that suggests they endorse people they know - creating a feel-good viral loop.

Recommendations v2
-
The first version of Recommendations product was launched in 2006 and had not been touched since. As a part of this project, apart from redesigning the UI to be lot simpler and cleaner , we revamped the entire infrastructure. The new backend uses the RestLi framework open-sourced by LinkedIn. The new frontend was written in Play with client-side formatters. Now, we can commit a change and push it to Prod within 2 hours.
