In the most recent episode of the Achieving Joy and Mastery in Public Schools podcast, Venu Govindaraju, a pioneer in #artificialintelligence (AI) research and innovation, and #UBuffalo’s vice president for research and economic development, sits down with Brian Graham, Ed.D., superintendent of Grand Island Public Schools to talk about UB’s work in harnessing AI to revolutionize education! In January 2023, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded $20 million to a team led by Govindaraju to establish the National AI Institute for Exceptional Education at UB. As director and principal investigator of the award, Govindaraju is leading the development of AI tools that will screen children early for speech and/or language processing challenges, which is expected to alleviate the shortage of #speechlanguagepathologists as well as help children with dyslexia, dysgraphia and other communication impairments. Transcript: Adrienne Murphy (Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care): First, in terms of understanding the pre-K landscape, the CUSP network has really helped us understand, in this three and four-year-old space, who's being served across the mixed delivery system, which has been especially important when our governor, the Healey Administration, announced a new Gateway to Pre-K Initiative, which included a proposal to deliver universal, high-quality preschool access for four-year-olds in all of our Gateway cities, which are our sort of mid-sized urban centers that are sort of the regional economic anchors across the state. And the cost model has been able to help us to benchmark sort of where are we now, who's being served across our licensed and funded early education care providers, across our public K-12 system, across our private school system, to be able to understand sort of the full landscape of who we're currently serving. And, by virtue of who we're currently serving, also, who are we not serving? Sort of what's the delta between where we are now in pre-K access for four-year-olds across the state, but really particularly in these gateway cities? And then sort of, what's the delta between where we are now and the universal access that is proposed in the gateway to Pre-K initiative? So, this is, you know, really one instance in which being able to know who are we currently serving, who are we not serving, and where are we not serving children has become really key for us and for Massachusetts as sort of the policy design process. As a non-engineer working with student engineering interns, #AI has been core to our ability to build, with ongoing expert advisor oversight, by senior engineers and data scientists, to guide us. In addition to experts advising us, MIT AI WhatsApp communities, developer or tech forums on Reddit, Discord, etc and YouTube videos create a community of problem-solving support and a “hive mind.” You never need to feel alone or “stuck.” Hackers love to problem-solve and to prove their skills by taking on challenges. What I have been able to do, with #growthmindet and high intelligence students, to work in a low budget way to rapidly prototype and test would not have been possible 5-10 years ago.

💻 College Now Enhances Access and Equity Through Advanced Technology Integration ⭐ College Now (CN) has gone live with a partnership with New Visions for Public Schools and New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) to expand access and tackle equity gaps in College Now by directly emailing tens of thousands of students and integrating CN data into a portal used by New York City Public School counselors to schedule students and plan for graduation. In addition, we launched a unified CN application - one application to apply for courses on any campus. These are massive tech innovations that are really leveraging technology for scale, efficiency, and equity. We made significant progress on our aim to enhance high school-campus collaboration in registration and enrollment. In late May, CN data integration with the New Visions for Public Schools Portal will be live. Accessible to all New York City Public Schools, this nationally recognized management tool synthesizes multiple live data sources in real-time. It offers a user-friendly wizard, dashboard, and query tools, enabling school staff to program students for courses, provide intervention support, and track college and career planning. The features launching this spring integrate CN course data and program eligibility with 7 pilot College Now campuses. This project aims to enhance visibility of students' progress from recruitment to enrollment, expanding recruitment efforts for CN applications, streamlining eligibility assessment, data gathering, and application tracking processes, and facilitating automatic transcript sharing with CUNY College Now campuses. Additionally, a new unified or "common" CUNY College Now Application will be introduced this spring to bolster recruitment efforts. Piloted with 6 campuses, this streamlined application will omit redundant questions already covered elsewhere (e.g. academic history), integrate a review ("pre-screen") with decision-making processes, enable addition of supplemental e-documents, and ensure easy access to transcript and demographic data already located in CUNYfirst speeding up student’s submission and admissions time. #CUNY #CUNYK16 #highered

Babson College is equipping its students with innovative AI-driven tools and resources to enhance their educational experience. The college has introduced the MathBot, developed in partnership with Microsoft and Terawe, to support student learning across various academic backgrounds. Additionally, Babson has committed $250,000 in AI-focused student grants to encourage exploration of innovative AI solutions. 'Our educators are constantly sourcing state-of-the-art tools and innovative solutions to accelerate learning and ensure student success,' said Patty Patria, CIO of Babson College. 'The rise of AI provided a perfect opportunity to bring individualized learning to students and better equip the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders.' The MathBot pairs academic material with generative AI capabilities to streamline the learning process, cater to individual student needs through customized learning pace and style, and offer additional online resources for future learning. In addition to the MathBot, Babson has dedicated $250,000 in grants for students to implement AI in educational or entrepreneurial endeavors. Up to 250 students will receive $1,000 each, after application and approval.
