Surgeon General Vivek Murthy talks about the need for a "whole-of-society approach" to advancing social connection. We've tried to heed that call in our work at Einhorn Collaborative, supporting a broader range of efforts that engage actors across sectors. That includes: Projects like Team Up to enlist large national civic organizations with a presence in local communities to help people build connection across difference through service. Research groups like Building H to measure the impact of products on consumers’ health and urge companies to do better to improve social connection and other health outcomes. Initiatives like Human Connections AI to bring together social connection experts with technologists to puzzle through how AI companions can be designed to enhance and not degrade human relationships. Another project that has helped us explore a facet of the whole-of-society approach is the Connective Tissue Framework, which puts forward a range of recommendations for how government – especially at the local level – can create the structural conditions and everyday opportunities for people to experience healthy connection. I've learned a lot from Sam Pressler, lead author of Connective Tissue. This is a great step in strengthening universal access to early childhood education. Universal efforts are crucial, but to change the trajectory for the most vulnerable and at-risk kids, we need to address poverty and the policy responses needed to better tackle entrenched disadvantage. This includes better supports for families during the perinatal period and supporting informal, inclusive and accessible environments for care and connection such as playgroups.

Donor Relations Can Never Be the Sole Responsibility of Advancement Sustained fundraising success requires sustaining donor trust which obligates organizational leaders to be careful about the promises they make to donors and doubly diligent about the ones they already made. A stewardship office, no matter how ably staffed, is only as effective as it manifests a larger lived ethic of accountability across the institution. Institutional leaders have to hold all recipients of private funds accountable to the donor. Most donors say they have been sufficiently thanked but under-informed about the impact of their giving. The CEO is the chief impact officer. Everyone in an executive position should know the names of the 25 most generous donors and the 25 most loyal donors (measured by years of giving). Members of the staff who give should be afforded the same respect and recognition as all other donors. Leaders engender gratitude and engrain accountability within. They understand that philanthropy begins at home.

Clear goals should drive the success of youth programs. As part of the Youth Offender Re-Entry Program evaluation under the new RFP process by the Orange County Citizens' Commission for Children, nonprofits were evaluated. But why are nonprofits penalized for unclear objectives? Business B is a nonprofit with a mission to break the cycle of poverty. They focus on education, employment training, and youth development. Their work changes lives, offering at-risk youth opportunities to grow, learn, and succeed. Despite their positive impact, their application faced challenges during the evaluation process. Why? Because their goals and objectives weren’t explicitly stated in the application. But here's the problem: • This nonprofit is making a real difference. • They are guiding youth toward a better future. However, the clarity of goals is vital to ensure accountability and quality. Impact should never come at the expense of clear direction. Think about this: Nonprofits like 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐁 are often working with limited resources.  While impact is critical, it's also essential that they set clear, measurable goals to demonstrate accountability. When the scoring process emphasizes clearly stated objectives, it ensures that every nonprofit is held to high standards of service delivery. Accountability and transparency matter, especially when it comes to serving at-risk youth. Here’s what happens when the process focuses too much on technicalities without flexibility: • Great programs get overlooked because of incomplete paperwork. • Nonprofits doing vital work miss out on funding. • The system can reward formality, but it must balance this with genuine impact. Shouldn't the focus be on how nonprofits are changing lives, while also ensuring they meet the necessary standards for accountability? The Commission needs to maintain a balance. Here’s what the Commission can do to help nonprofits like Business B: Provide guidance: ↳ Help nonprofits better articulate their goals and demonstrate how their impact aligns with them. Focus on accountability and quality: ↳ Recognize that small organizations may need assistance in navigating complex applications but should still meet clear standards for quality and accountability. Emphasize both impact and transparency: ↳ Prioritize the results these organizations are delivering for at-risk youth rather than penalizing them for technicalities. Nonprofits aren’t asking for leniency; they’re asking for fairness. They seek a system that acknowledges the importance of both their outcomes and their ability to meet transparent, well-articulated objectives. What do you think?
