It is becoming increasingly important for companies that rely on ocean shipping to start taking an interest in U.S. maritime policy, and Brent Sadler is one of the smartest and most vocal proponents of a major revamp of it. UPDATE ON STATUS OF USMX-ILA NEGOTIATIONS LYNDHURST, NJ (NOVEMBER 13, 2024) – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE “Over the last two days, USMX met with the ILA to bargain and resolve all remaining outstanding issues needed to reach agreement on a new Master Contract. While we had positive progress on a number of issues, we were unable to make significant progress on our discussions that focused on a range of technology issues. Unfortunately, the ILA is insisting on an agreement that would move our industry backward by restricting future use of technology that has existed in some of our ports for nearly two decades – making it impossible to evolve to meet the nation’s future supply chain demands. The USMX has been clear that we are not seeking technology that would eliminate jobs. What we need is continued modernization that is essential to improve worker safety, increase efficiency in a way that protects and grows jobs, keeps supply chains strong, and increases capacity that will financially benefit American businesses and workers alike. Port Strike Disruptions on U.S. East and Gulf Coasts – Key Updates and Impact As of midnight on September 30th, container operations have been halted following unsuccessful negotiations between the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX). While the strike's duration is uncertain, estimates suggest it could last between 3 to 7 days—though this remains speculative. For context, each day of port closure typically results in about a week’s worth of backlog clearance once operations resume. Although USMX has requested government intervention, the administration has opted not to invoke the Taft-Hartley Act, which would pause the strike for up to 80 days. Instead, they are urging both parties to continue collective bargaining efforts. The attached map highlights the affected ports. Please note, Canadian and Mexican ports are not viable options for household goods (HHGs) shipments destined for the U.S. due to customs clearance restrictions. Dockworkers on the U.S. East and Gulf coasts are gearing up for contract negotiations. Talks are expected to begin soon, as the current contract expires on September 30. Both the ILA (International Longshoremen’s Association) and the USMA (United States Maritime Alliance) are aiming to avoid a repeat of the recent west coast negotiations that were delayed by local disputes. To achieve this, the union has instructed its branches to settle any outstanding local issues by mid-May.
