'Labs Team to Deliver Ten Papers at NeurIPS #AI Conference.' #HPE @Soumyendu Sarkar’s AI research team at Hewlett Packard Labs will present 10 papers at this week’s prestigious Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) in Vancouver. This annual event is known widely as one of the world's top conferences for AI/ML and data science.Three of the papers focus on how artificial intelligence (AI) can advance sustainability of data centers. Four papers address large language models (LLMs) and foundational models spanning different areas from trustworthiness, multi-modal video-language models, and application of LLMs for analytics and code generation for nuclear fusion optimization. Two papers involve collaborations with University of Rochester on a U.S. Department of Energy-funded project to advance nuclear fusion research with AI with a promise to unlimited clean energy. I recently watched Elon Musk's interview at the Milken Institute Conference, where he said: "An AI that is truth-seeking and maximally curious could greatly advance human civilization." At SparkBeyond, these principles are deeply embedded in our product philosophy and our mission. - AI output must be provable, grounded in data and quantifiable. - To find the truth, don't rely solely on LLMs intuition (biases). Instead, systematically scan the idea space to maximize chances of unbiased and novel discoveries. We strongly believe that these principles are critical to enable AI support high-stake decisions. We apply these principles in our hypothesis engine, which systematically generates billions of questions and then validates them on data. This embodies the essence of a truth-seeking, curious AI. LLMs allowed us to take it to the next level by adding a common sense layer on top of the statistical truth discovery capability. However, I believe this is just the first step. We've seen the impact of that web-scale training on the performance of LLMs. A possible next frontier may be running a "curious" autonomous research on the entire corpus of data and knowledge available on the web. Great thought provoking essay by AI veteran Rodney Brooks evaluating different AI applications. Various capability predictions in the areas of FSD, Robotics, LLM, DL and Space Flights are listed along with timelines. They are labeled with one of the following by Brooks 1)accurate 2)too pessimistic 3)too optimistic. He labels almost all the predictions to be too optimistic. It will be interesting to see how many people start calling Brooks a Luddite. He attributes unrealistic expectations of humans to 4 sins 1)Performances vs Competence We are pretty good at predicting capabilities of other humans based on our observation of current capabilities. But this doesn’t extend to other animals or AI systems 2)Indistinguishable from magic When people cannot explain how something works they cannot know its limits as they do not have any sort of model. They start attributing magical qualities to that something 3)Exponentialism The sin of exponentialism is that some other process that has a strong computational component is going to follow a Moore’s-like law when it is unwarranted to so argue. 4)Speed of deployment New technology development is much slower than what people expect #ai #prediction #llm #robot #fsd

Microsoft's new Al model VASA-1 takes a single portrait photo and speech audio and produces a hyper-realistic talking face video. The precise lip-audio sync, lifelike facial behavior, and naturalistic head movements are generated in real time. Seeing is no longer believing. If companies like Microsoft care so much about supporting a safe internet experience for citizens globally, then why do they also feel it is imperative to build tools that can fake human existence? In their newest release of VASA-1, they say: "Currently, the videos generated by this method still contain identifiable artifacts, and the numerical analysis shows that there's still a gap to achieve the authenticity of real videos." Why does Microsoft have to develop a tool to achieve the authenticity of real videos? Tech advancement is good but it comes with a price.
