The year 2022 was a time of transition as the world was still trying to settle down in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was during this period that I made the biggest career move of my life - I joined Amazon. Today marks my 2-year #Amaversary, and I couldn't be more grateful for the amazing journey that has unfolded since then. Back then, I had no idea what surprises were in store for me, but so far, it has been an incredible experience. Amazon is all about "Work Hard, Have Fun, and Make History," and I have fully embraced this spirit. The Amazon culture is truly unique, and it's essential to learn the art of unlearning and relearning when starting your Amazon journey to navigate it successfully. Over the past two years, I've been amazed by the many peculiarities that define the Amazon way of working. Those who don't know; below are a few: Metrics: “It changed by X%, from Y to Z”. At Amazon, everything is measured by metrics—from project launches and prioritization to operational excellence and peak planning. Success and failure are both evaluated based on data-driven metrics; yes, failure too. Writing: Writing the Amazon way is hard but efficient. Whether it’s a technical or non-technical document, you need time, effort, and iterations to meet high standards. It's a skill that takes time to develop. Working backwards: How often would it have happened that you took some goal without a target date, started working on it, but slowly and eventually you lost track of or interest in something that was important at one point? In Amazon, we set a target date and then plan backwords to meet that target. It is just shifting the order in which we typically work. Trust me, it's very powerful and changes everything. DFD (Dates-for-Date): Since I talked about working backwords, date is important. “When is this going to be done?” If the answer is not a precise date, you give a DFD, which means you will come back with a precise date by DFD. We always answer a question about dates with a date or a date-for-a-date. Beyond these peculiarities, Amazon’s culture is something that makes it stand out among other companies. Amazon’s culture is very thoughtfully defined, and that’s the reason Amazon has survived for 30 years. Our unique Amazon culture is described by our leadership principles: Customer Obsession, Ownership, Think Big, Invent and Simplify, Insist on High Standards , Learn and Be Curious, Bias for Action, and many others. Our Leadership Principles describe how Amazon does business, how leaders lead, how engineers create products used by millions, and how we keep the customer at the center of our decisions. I am so grateful for the wealth of learning and looking forward to many more with the bunch of extremely talented people who surround me. The Silent Revolution: How AI is Changing Lives in Rural India During a recent visit to my ancestral village, I came across a boy sitting on the temple steps, deeply engrossed in his phone. Curious, I asked what he was doing. With a proud smile, he told me he was learning math using ChatGPT. “It explains everything so clearly,” he said, his excitement lighting up the conversation. That moment stayed with me. Here was a child in rural India, leveraging cutting-edge AI to access knowledge that was once beyond his reach. He wasn’t just learning math; he was breaking barriers, rewriting what’s possible in a village where resources are scarce. This is the silent revolution AI is driving—bridging the gap between urban and rural, making world-class education accessible to anyone with a smartphone. It’s more than just technology; it’s hope, opportunity, and empowerment. Of course, challenges remain: digital access, affordability, and literacy gaps need our attention. But this boy reminded me of the incredible potential AI has to level the playing field and inspire dreams in even the most remote corners of the world. During Prime Day 2018, significant parts of the Amazon Store were down for about 3 hours during the busiest shopping day of the year. It was a fascinating study in real-world systems architecture at scale: a sale item that was particularly popular caused a hot partition in a massive distributed hashtable, and this started a multi-level retry storm that brought many, many, many thousands of servers to their knees. I was here at the time, and I remember following the real-time investigation glued to my screen as details unveiled. Amazon being Amazon, we took this failure as an opportunity to improve: rearchitected a lot of our systems, focusing on handling congestion, rethinking the way we retried failures, restricting unbounded queues, and, of course, load and stress testing. I was the Lead for Load and Performance Testing Infrastructure at Amazon at the time, so I found myself in the perfect middle of all this. It was a fascinating time!

Biggest Misconceptions about EB1A I get a lot of people reaching out to me around my EB1A approval and the process around it, and I observe a real lack of understanding around the EB1A Visa process. Here are some of the biggest misconceptions about the EB1A visa: 1. Only for Nobel Prize Winners ❌: Many believe that the EB1A visa is only for individuals who have won major international awards like the Nobel Prize. In reality, meeting three out of ten criteria is sufficient. 2. Requires Extraordinary Achievement in Only One Field ❌: The EB1A visa recognizes achievements across various fields, including sciences, arts, education, business, and athletics. 3. Must Have U.S. Job Offer ❌: The EB1A visa does not require a job offer or labor certification, and individuals can self-petition. 4. Cannot Apply Without Legal Representation ❌: While having an attorney can be beneficial, individuals can successfully apply for the EB1A visa without legal representation, provided they thoroughly understand the requirements and process. 5. Lengthy Processing Time ❌: The processing time can be relatively short, especially with the option of premium processing. 6. Needs Extensive Publications ❌: Publications are just one of the ten criteria, and applicants can qualify through other significant achievements and contributions. 7. Only for Established Professionals ❌: Emerging talents and individuals with potential for continued achievements can also qualify if they meet the required criteria. 8. Immediate Approval if Criteria Met ❌: Meeting three out of the ten criteria does not guarantee approval. The USCIS also considers the overall strength of the case. 9. EB1A Has High Denial Rates ❌: EB1A applications are adjudicated based on the merits of the application. Unlike the H1B visa, which relies on a lottery system, the success of an EB1A application depends on understanding the requirements and preparing strong documentation. 10. Difficult to Prove Sustained National or International Acclaim ❌: Building a compelling EB1A profile involves strengthening individual criteria, providing strong recommendation letters, excluding weak evidence, and presenting a well-crafted narrative of the applicant’s extraordinary ability. 11. EB1A Receives High Requests for Evidence (RFEs) ❌: Every EB1A application is reviewed based on its own merit. Even if an RFE is issued, it provides an opportunity to address concerns and clarify misunderstandings. 12. Young Professionals Don’t Qualify for EB1A ❌: Young professionals who have made significant contributions to their field and achieved major milestones can still qualify for the EB1A. The term "sustained" does not specify a time frame or age limit. ### Final Note 🐉🗡️🛡️ Every profile is different, and it takes time to build a strong, organic profile. A simple soap cake that was packaged in paper packaging now is being packaged in hard plastic, that too just the foam part, not even the liquid part. And going by the looks, this is definitely going to last much shorter than the soap cake, so more frequent plastic generation. When will FMCG companies really think about the massive plastic problem they are creating in the name of selling innovative products ? It almost never seems like they are responsibly creating products that are environmentally friendly.
