The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has gone public with its official framework for vehicle-to-grid integration. In our last post, we outlined four of the five pillars that will hold up this new plan. > https://lnkd.in/e2ruBkZb But it’s the final pillar that we’re most excited about.   That’s because it’s all about the #customer. This is what counts for the average EV owner, because it’s the part of VGI they’ll be dealing with every day.   According to the DOE, consumers need a choice of charging options, providers and rates — and all those options should be clear and accessible. They need to be able to decide how to interface with the grid so they can make the most money in a way that is convenient to them. That compensation needs to be commensurate with value provided to the grid.   And above all, things should be simple and straightforward. “Implementation complexity is invisible to customers and reduces the participation burden,” notes the report. “Technology eases the customer’s ability to respond to dynamic rates or signals that optimize charging or discharging based on grid or market conditions. Customer set preferences ensure that EV drivers do not need to continually manage and respond to signals themselves.” What are your thoughts on the DOE's #VGI roadmap?

California crosses 10 GW battery storage threshold: California is adding massive amounts of battery energy storage, and the project pipeline shows no sign of slowing down. For our Tech Tuesday, a report form Renewable Energy World on research around grid-forming inverters to enhance grid stability. "Researchers at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and their collaborators have created new models meant to allow power system engineers to evaluate how a new technology, the grid-forming inverter, would work on the grid to improve grid stability. The new models, REGFM_A1 and REGFM_B1 — developed by PNNL in collaboration with multiple inverter manufacturers, software vendors, and power system planners — were recently approved by the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC), which oversees the nation’s western power grid. WECC’s approval makes these models the first industry-approved, publicly available grid-forming inverter models that are integrated into utilities’ everyday simulation tools used worldwide, such as Siemens PSSE or PowerWorld Simulator, among others. The integrations give transmission planners access to the models to perform planning studies, PNNL said, especially for those studies where vendor-specific models are unavailable. The models represent two mainstream grid-forming technologies used in the industry: droop control and virtual synchronous machine control." Electric Power Systems, Inc. (EPS), a leading battery technology company in the aviation sector, has submitted its application for Technical Standard Order (TSO) TSO-C179b approval of its EPIC 1.0 Rechargeable Lithium Battery System to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This milestone underscores EPS's commitment to advancing aviation technology and enhancing safety and reliability in the skies. The EPIC 1.0 Battery System is designed with a scalable battery module featuring robust containment and venting provisions. It includes a sophisticated battery management system (BMS) that ensures extensive monitoring, protection, and communication capabilities for safe operation on aircraft. The submission process for TSO approval is rigorous. EPS's application comprised over 2,600 pages of plans, procedures, reports, and compliance data required by RTCA DO-311A, DO-178, DO-160, and DO-254. Several factors contribute to this difference, including obligations for storage resources with resource adequacy contracts, Default Energy Bid (DEB) complexities, and CAISO’s methods of awarding ancillary services based on State of Charge (SOC) expectations. Comparing individual systems in ERCOT and CAISO, we see that ERCOT batteries primarily rely on ancillary services throughout the day, while CAISO batteries need Day-Ahead Energy to ensure they are cleared for higher-value RegUp and RegDn awards."
