The confidentiality, integrity, and availability of this data are paramount to protect patient privacy and ensure the continuity of care and the overall trust in healthcare systems. If you buy a car, you know that in 7-10 years time (or sooner) you have to replace it or it will end up costing you a fortune in repairs, maintenance and parts. Many of us don't buy cars any more, we effectively rent them, because we know this. Why is healthcare technology any different? Yet, we get investment for small amounts of IT systems, and then it becomes REALLY difficult to get the funding to upgrade them, replace them, support them, etc. As well as a business case to buy we probably need to include a business case to retire them. Siloam Cloud Migration at a Glance Some companies may consider migrating their infrastructure and applications to the cloud due to benefits like observability, scalability, and availability. Others may consider it for future initiatives involving interoperability, AI, automation, and more. At Siloam, we have already migrated almost all of our infrastructure and applications to the cloud. Our objectives of improving observability, scalability, and availability have been partially achieved and continue to improve over time. Here are some lessons we learned from our experience: 1. Understand Your Needs: Why are you migrating your infrastructure and applications to the cloud? What are you looking to achieve, and how do these goals align with your company's business objectives? 2. Conduct a Proper Business Case: Calculate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) to ensure the financial viability of the migration. 3. Choose the Right Cloud Provider and Partner: Decide on one of the market leaders in cloud services and select a supportive cloud partner. 4. Avoid Technology Lock-In: Ensure you can move from one cloud provider to another easily. You never know what obstacles might arise in the future, so decide on a suitable architecture that works for your company. 5. Train Your People: Before migrating, ensure your team receives proper training. While involving a cloud partner can expand support, your team knows your infrastructure and applications best. Initially, our vendor led the migration, but it was projected to take 1.5 years. We took over the leadership, with the vendor supporting the execution, and completed the migration in less than a year. 6. Don't Rely Solely on Vendors: Vendors might have started earlier, but investing in your own people can lead to faster and more accurate execution. 7. Monitor Cost Consumption: Keep a close eye on costs, as you may be surprised by the expenses. Your DevSecOps team should also focus on financial management (DevSecFinOps) to ensure costs remain within budget.
