The math is real simple. Input costs to care have risen by 17.5% from 2019 to 2022 while reimbursement rates have only increased 7.5%. The AHA's own report titled The Cost of Caring dated April 2023 digs deep into many confluences that have driven cost up. Labor costs, Supply costs, and drug cost for instance. FTE contract expense rose by over 200% from 2019 to 2022. This rise in contract labor expense fueled for a large part an increase in overall labor expense. Worse, there is a nationwide shortage of nurses. Medical supplies per patient have increased over 15% between 2019 and 2022. Healthcare system supply chains need to undergo a deep evaluation of every facet of of their supply chain cost. Who is your Ideal Client. Last week I was over in Deerfield Beach, FL speaking at the 2024 Private Care Symposium for the Home Care Association of Florida. We were talking about "Selling Home Care to Your Ideal Client." The premise of the program is that not all clients are created equal, and that as business owner you will be more successful and prosperous when you are clear about your ideal clients and how to reach them. There are two ways to identify your ideal client. One is to use Data Oriented Decision Making to analyze your own data to identify those clients that are the best fit for your company. The other is to use the more informal "Best Clients / Worst Client" analysis" to review a list of your best clients and identify common characteristics. One of the things that came out of our conversation was to describe the "Ideal Caller". Our analysis over the years has helped us to create the concept of "The Oldest Daughter Syndrome." This syndrome says that 60% of the time, the personal calling a Home Care company for care for an older person is the oldest daughter. Another 20% of the time it is another daughter. By looking at best fit clients for many Home Care companies over the years, we have identified a hypothetical model of what the "Ideal Caller" might look like. From that, we have been able to develop a sales and marketing strategy where Home Care companies can increase the likelihood of attracting and serving their ideal client. Medical debt judgments in North Carolina can last up to 20 years and place liens on patients' homes, with interest accumulating at 8% annually. Atrium’s decision comes amidst increasing national scrutiny on hospitals' billing and debt collection practices, particularly as medical debt continues to rise across the U.S. Around 20% of North Carolinians have medical debt in collections, according to the Urban Institute. 🚨 Update on Baptist Health and Florida Blue Negotiations 🚨 Negotiations between Baptist Health and Florida Blue are ongoing and remain tense as the September 30 contract deadline approaches. Discussions have been underway since February 2024, but no agreement has been reached. The core issue is payment rates: Baptist Health seeks increases to cover rising costs, arguing that current rates are below market, while Florida Blue contends that these demands are excessive and significantly above inflation. With the potential for Baptist Health services to become out-of-network for Florida Blue members on October 1, many patients in Northeast Florida are left uncertain about their healthcare options. Top Notch Webinar today "Workforce Solutions Jam" Presented by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, The College for Behavioral Health Leadership and Health Management Associates, hosted by CEO of CBHL, Holly Salazar Topics included: #TeamKentucky's replicable example and leadership in Workforce Innovation and Development in the state through collaborative models, and understnading the need for short term wins but long term investment and development. I wish I could share ALL of my notes with you, but there's not enough characters allowed. 😂 Guests included Tena Robbins, Beth Kuhn, and Dr. Katie Marks commissioner for the state of Kentucky's Mental Health, Developmental and IDD department. A few key takeaways and points worth repeating: ✅ Unlike lots of other medicine and biometrics, Humans are the intervention in mental health, not machines. ✅ Services in Behavioral Health (like anywhere) are only as good as the workforce. ✅ Need for intentional focus on workforce sustainability goes beyond hiring, developing the next generation of providers is essenital. ✅ Collaboration and design of strategies with stakeholders, not shareholders. ✅ Future-facing requires broad investment. ✅ Importance of building trust and generating solutions to avoid workforce poaching. And my favorite: ✅ Behavioral Health Directors / facilitities / entitites NEED workforce strategy experts. This point was repeated multiple times and shared that the biggest regret in the process of Behavioral Health workforce solutions, was not partnering with an expert. "We know Behavioral Health, what we aren't are experts in Workforce ... especially not scaled, sustainable, retention strategies." Other awesome hosts, Paul Fleissner with #HMA echoed the importance of breaking down silos between healthcare and behavioral healthcare as mentioned by #teamKentucky Dr. Gina Lasky shareD #CenterforWorkforceSolutions updates including the "Levers of Change" that will need to be pulled, along with Payment (across many areas including: loan repayment, BH workforce salaries, and ding ding ding: #REIMBURSEMENT).
