When high-level individuals begin speaking publicly about social media harms, it signals one thing: there’s a clear market for Social Media Harm Reduction. While the Social Media Research Institute (SMRI) has yet to connect directly with these individuals in the UK mentioned below , plans are underway to establish a flagship presence there. This initiative aims to engage those interested in the field and provide university professors with opportunities to study and contribute to the development of Social Media Harm Reduction practices in the European Region. It was awesome to listen to Sam Altman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology this afternoon. Below are my reflections and an important warning he shared, which I believe is particularly important for anyone starting a company today. - 🚀 We've been waiting over a decade for a platform shift: this is the best time to start a company or to get into the workforce. We had a similar window with the Internet, with mobile and with cloud (AWS), now AI is opening up the field for innovators and entrepreneurs to build the next wave of companies. - 🎇 P(doom) is not 0. Altman said he doesn't really know but he believes the odds that AI destroys humankind are higher than zero which is somewhat scary but not surprising. Many very smart people have issued warnings and are taking steps to ensure this doesn't happen. Isn't it kind of crazy that this is something we're discussing? - 🗣 Think of this revolution as a way to get the interface closer to what humans are used to. We've traced a progression from punched cards to low-level and high level programming languages all the way to the GUI (keyboard and mouse) and touch screens. LLMs allow us to interact with machines that have cognition using human language which is just a simpler and more intuitive way for humans to take advantage of compute. I love this framing and agree wholeheartedly. ☠ Sam's Warning: with any new tech platform you can drive amazing short term growth but don't forget to create long term value. You need to build relationships with customers, switching costs, compounding advantages over time. My take is that you basically have to build a real business regardless of the tech or the infrastructure that you use. Overall he had a very positive outlook on human kind which was refreshing and of course he leaned on the power of AI to help us move faster and accelerate the pace of scientific discovery to drive society forward.
