If you climb the ladder into management too fast you can base the rest of your career on a shaky technical foundation. Once you reach management you are learning a whole new set of skills and the growth of your technical skills will slow dramatically. Some things just need experience - time spent honing your craft. As a technical manager your tech skills are invaluable to your role. Take time to build that foundation deep and wide and it will pay dividends when you enter management roles. Stay ambitious and keep learning every day, but remember, it's not a race to the top. Overly focusing on box-ticking and climbing can do you a disservice and may leave you stuck on a lower rung than you could have otherwise reached.

Being Resolute in Searching for the Pocket of Goodness ‘“Real life” and “Practical concerns” often distract us from following up on little things that might be good if they had a chance to grow and mature. It can be easy to let things drop. Watch for this and find ways to keep the good things in mind so they don’t wither. When you find something good, make it visible.
