I know this is a hot take, but I think we tend to overcomplicate things as Marketers (GASP! 🤯). No one needs what we're marketing. What our customers are looking for is a feeling. And not all customers are looking for the same feeling. DATA: 👉 According to a study by the Advertising Research Foundation, ads with purely emotional content perform about twice as well (31% vs. 16%) as those with only rational content when it comes to driving profit growth. 👉 Research from Harvard Business School professor Gerald Zaltman estimates that 95% of purchase decisions happen subconsciously. The quicker we understand what feeling each customer wants from us, the better we're going to be as marketers. This week I talk with Matt Miller, President and CEO of the AICP (Association of Independent Commercial Producers) in the US. AICP represents the interests of independent companies that specialise in the production and post production of commercials in various media—film, video, digital—for advertisers and agencies. Matt looks back on his 30 years with AICP and considers how the industry has changed (or not) in that time. “I think probably more has stayed the same than changed”, he says. He also reveals how he ended up on The Today Show many times as a correspondent for all things advertising, often explaining the cultural phenomena of Super Bowl advertising to the US audience. We discuss the changing nature of production and procurement – how production costs vary around the world and why the US is amongst the most expensive. Matt explains the balancing act for any brand is between the value of US talent and expertise versus potential cost-savings elsewhere. Is there a potential conflict where agencies may not be providing the best outcome for their clients? Also, what do these shifts mean for talent, talent development and people thinking about their career trajectory? Here's where most trade shows and conferences go wrong: There are three distinct groups: 👉 Organizers 👉 Attendees 👉 Exhibitors And they rarely mix. We hosted our first user conference and did the exact opposite of this. Event organizers, attendees and other CoLab employees mingled with all attendees morning, noon and night (and late, late night 😆 ) And attendees LOVED it! I have been to SO many shows where organizers and exhibitors stay behind their booth, their table or in their own little conference room and just worry about the show's A/V going off without a hitch. The show is the show! And it should be where organizers show up. I told this to a lot of my marketing friends: The way our user conference went made me mad at all the other shows I've attended. Because for the first time, everyone just felt like they were in the same room to meet new people and share new ideas. Pretty freaking cool when you think about it. #b2bmarketing #b2bevents

Here at North Star, I am the lead writer and @Michelle Cohl is the managing editor. She is the keeper of all the instructions, requirements and parameters that we have to meet in order to give our clients what they want. I hate instructions, requirements and parameters so I tend to try to ignore them and write the assignment the way I want to. Michelle then summons me, shows me the details I was supposed to remember and tells me to go back to work - at which point I tend to argue for why these parameters don't make the work better. What follows is usually a dynamic process in which the two of us figure out a puzzle: How to check every box the client wants or needs, while still getting the benefit of our very strong instincts as writers. The result is excellence. Making it work requires each of us to recognize we have different strengths and points of emphasis, but that we both value the same thing - the absolute best work for our clients. I don't think this works with every combination of teammates, but you need both the appreciation of the process and respect for the other person's instincts that are different from yours. We've been honing and mastering this process, and our approach to it, for nearly five years. I'm very proud of how we do it. MARKETING CLIENTS AND AGENCIES CAN LEARN A LOT ABOUT SCOPES-OF-WORK (SOWs) AND FEES FROM AUTO MECHANICS. Here’s an example from “real life” that we all know … Whether for a simple tune-up or to fix a specific problem, we all ask for an estimate and that estimate typically includes fees for time, parts, and labor. That is: 1) “Time” for diagnostic research and recommendations; 2) “Parts” to fix or improve the status quo (with mark-up), and 3) Highly skilled “Labor” to actually get the job done. That is an auto mechanic’s scope-of-work. And if we don’t like the SOW and estimate, we can always shop around for a cheaper (though not necessarily better) deal somewhere else. And then there is the issue of unforeseen events not anticipated in the original estimate, where a simple tune-up suddenly turns into a major valve job replacement or new transmission. That is, an expanded SOW and what I call “mission creep”, which translates to more time, parts, and labor. Yet for some reason, paid advertisers expect agencies to now offer “fixed-priced” menus of services, irrespective of the aforementioned SOW considerations – especially “Labor”, i.e., highly skilled manhours. And if you don’t buy my auto mechanic illustration, just ask your doctor, dentist, lawyer, or financial advisor, because (quality and outcomes notwithstanding) they operate under the same SOW model as auto mechanics. Time + Parts + Labor = Cost. It’s axiomatically true in every business! But if you want the cheapest “vendor”, you can easily find one, because they’re “a dime a dozen” these days. while 65-80% of agency costs go to manpower, where we don't just make "widgets".  😎
