As part of the panel at the launch of Gallagher – Employee Experience & Communication‘s State of the Sector report earlier this year, I spoke about measurement being the ‘golden thread’ for communicators. 👀 It helps us see what we should focus on (it’s business objectives) 👩‍💼 It helps us bring stakeholders on the journey 📊 It helps us demonstrate what’s working and what needs to change next time. All our activities should start and end with meaningful measurement.

We market to customers. We market to candidates. I agree with Josh Bersin maybe it's time we market to employees. Build the same level of personalized campaigns along the employee journey as we do the buyer's journey or the candidate's journey. We built amazing nurtures at @lever for candidates that helped a candidate better understand a company's visions, mission, and values and build engagement with the potential hiring manager and others. Why wouldn't we continue that for employees? The same initiatives matter to employees - maybe we need to think about employees as always-on candidates and continue to engage them along their employee journey. We are thinking a lot about this at Firstup and how we can help HR and Comms have the same relationship management tools that marketers have.

Some good reminders and new tips on productivity in this Harvard Business Review article. Worth reading as you start thinking about New Year’s resolutions. A couple of takeaways: Protect the limited time you have for focused work (the first step is to acknowledge how limited that time really is). Keep it simple. Use those boring, but easy and proven-to-work, strategies in all the ways you can. Get better at creatively applying simple ideas rather than searching for complex ones. Those once-in-a-blue-moon tasks are time sucks. Make it easy to repeat the process by writing down instructions for the most efficient way to do it and save those in an easily searchable place. #productivity #strategy

HR Brew published a great summary of our USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism x Staffbase benchmark study into how employees feel about how companies communicate with them . 😬 Just 29% of workers are very satisfied with how companies communicate with them. Pretty shocking stuff with a real business cost, as there is a causal link to employee motivation and productivity. ⏰ This report really is a wake up call for leaders. It's time to put as much thought into HOW you communicate to your teams as WHAT you say.
