⚾️🦝💰Major League Baseball has new facility standards to modernize Minor League stadiums. The City of Madison and BallCorps, LLC, the Trash Pandas' parent company, are working through what they'll build - and who's paying for what. I couldn't fit the whole night's worth of details in an under-2-minute package (local broadcast television is not a longform-friendly medium). I hope the following serves as useful context and more info. --- The City of Madison looking to make the cheapest and, in the words of Mayor Paul Finley, “least invasive” renovation of existing area and constructing new, MLB-compliant baseball space (visitors clubhouse, bullpen, etc.) The City of Madison's facilities office ran the numbers on 3 options: 1.) do the MLB-required maintenance and renovations, costing Madison about $4 million 2.) MLB requirements + build 1-story building with 7 suites, costing Madison about $7 million 3.) MLB requirements + build 4-story building with 7 suites and utility space, costing Madison about $25 million Option 1, the MLB-mandated renovations/upgrades, is happening. Now, it’s a question of how much will that cost the city, how much will BallCorps pay for it, and what other amenities, if anything, gets built, too. An unofficial vote was taken to get a sense of who supported which plan. Option 3 earned 4/7 votes + vocal support from mayor Paul Finley. He doesn't have an actual, official vote on it and iterated it came from his personal point of view, not as mayor, either. I wasn’t expecting a capacity crowd for last night’s Toronto Blue Jays-Detroit Tigers game, but then realized…the game was an Apple TV + exclusive broadcast. Though criticized, these broadcasts have an unintended benefit. Nothing like not being able to watch your team on TV to get you down to the ballpark! Not many recall the days of local TV blackouts in the 1970s that aimed to “force” people to attend games at the stadium. Some people blame the blackout policy for the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts losing a generation of fans in this market as fans gravitated to free-to-air NFL broadcasts on the Buffalo affiliates of U.S. TV networks. However, these occasional Apple TV games - beyond reaching cord cutter or cord never tech-savvy Gen Zers and Millennials - could also be having the positive effect of spiking game attendance. If Apple TV+ games can be strategically scheduled for nights and opponents that typically yield low attendance, the deal will have greater benefits than expected. Perhaps a moderated, as opposed to an absolute broadcast ban, would have achieved the desired effect of the blackout policy. However, in our current era of content demand, content discovery, brand building, and streaming service proliferation, the notion of intentional blackouts seems incomprehensible to me. #sportsmedia #nostalgia #streaming #blackout

INSIDE LOOK: Covering NFL Training Camp First off, it is not all access. Local media members have certain viewing windows and opportunities to speak with players. For instance, at the first practice for the Atlanta Falcons, local videographers could only shoot two designated periods while still welcome to observe the entirety of the session. Post-practice, not all players are made available to speak. Reporters typically must request certain players. The Falcons do a great job of accommodating but can’t always honor each request. The photo is from Kirk Cousins’ post-practice press conference. Prior to his availability, several players also spoke outside during scrums (no podium, just every camera and reporter huddle around) while another star, Grady Jarrett, talked at the podium. It can be chaotic but the media understands how busy a player or coach is during training camp so we’re appreciative of their time. This is very much a strategy of less is more. The less we get to see and hear, the more urgency we must have during our opportunities. Days like today make you a better journalist!

Sports' teams social media and video production departments are going to busy prepping for the NFL Schedule release coming on Wednesday. Teams get their schedules on Monday. The schedule release is one of the most popular days for the NFL. The socials and video team put together some creative stuff to market the top games on their schedule and I can't wait for what the clubs come up with next. As a Giants fan, I hope they take elements from the NYC to make their socials campaign. I have a few ideas. Games are going to be announced prior to the official schedule release next Wednesday May 15th. A game I want scheduled is: Week 16: Eagles @ Giants (Christmas Day) (4:25) Saquon coming back to MetLife after joining the Giants' most hated rival in the division in free agency. That's something the NFL can market and a game that should be highlighted. There's nothing worse that can irritate a fanbase more than signing with your most hated rival. For social media teams for Sports teams, how busy are y'all when it comes to these schedule releases?

So you want to be a minor league baseball broadcaster? Here is what the over 8,000 miles of travel I had last year with the Glacier Range Riders looked like. My first piece of advice to young baseball broadcasters is usually more about the travel than about the actual calling of the game. Figure out quickly if and how you can sleep on a bus, also what are the best snacks to grab during gas station stops and maybe what TV series or movies you want to catch up on and download before you hit the road. But really, the road has more value than getting you from Point A to Point B. The road is where you earn a lot of the respect and credibility with the players, coaches, and staff you work with. Here is what you absolutely need to keep in mind when you’re on the road: -Don’t be late. Making the bus wait for you is the QUICKEST way to irk everybody on the team, but especially the coaching staff. Set a bunch of alarms and don’t procrastinate packing. -Don’t be on-time. Nobody tells you this, but you figure it out quickly, nobody shows up at 7 AM for a 7 AM bus. Most people are there at least 30 minutes before. You want to be there before the bus is, because that’s the only way to make sure you get your spot. Players will factor in spots for coaches, but they’ll probably forget about you and the trainer early in the season. -Find Stories on Trips. On the road is one of your best times to interact with athletes. Find the right time to ask the right questions. The right time is usually when eating meals, during BP, or downtime early in bus rides before everybody falls asleep or zones out. The right question is NOT “tell me about yourself”, I’ve felt that SPECIFIC questions that you’ve pondered during games but don’t know for sure, do a much better job. “I saw your dad was a football player, why’d you end up playing baseball instead?” does so much more to show that you’ve done your homework, but you’re interested in going beyond what the internet can tell you. -Opponents are Your Friends. If you’re a solo road broadcaster, it can be lonely. At the minor league level, you’re usually the only one in road stadiums rooting for the visiting team. The opposing press box staff are your closest allies because they understand the grind you’re on. Always show appreciation when they go out of their way to help you, remember their names, and make connections with them just as much as you should with the opposing broadcaster. -Keep It Professional. Everybody has a different opinion on this, but my perspective it to hold a line of professionalism between you and athletes, no matter how close in age you are to them and how logical it may seem. Even in a professional setting, where they are technically your coworkers. Don’t go out with players after game, don’t ask questions that are ~too~ personal, and never turn too many eyes on you for the wrong reasons. Other road broadcasters, what is your advice for young broadcasters that are traveling for the first time?
