Logging While Drilling (LWD) has grown by leaps and bounds since the early 2000’s. Oliden Technology, a Houston-based company has bet the farm on this market. LWD was initially conceived by innovators like Marvin Gearhart as replacement for wireline. The first real breakthrough came in the late 1980’s when Richard Meador introduced the wave propagation resistivity on drill collar. Rich received the SPWLA Distinguished Technical Achievement Award for this innovation. Then came the triple-combo, the quad combo, micro-electrical and ultrasonic imaging with full borehole coverage, magnetic resonance, and formation testing. The wireline replacement suite by LWD was completed by major service companies by 2010. The only thing that prevented the full-sweep displacement of wireline was the cost of the LWD equipment. A Major benefit of LWD over wireline emerged in the early 2000's with the deployment of Schlumberger's Boundary-Mapping PeriScope led by Qiming Li, and the geosteering concept from tilted antenna patented by Halliburton’s Michael Bittar: Real-Time Decisions. Geoscientists and drillers can now pilot horizontal wells based on timely information and visualization from LWD. Drilling challenges, over-pressure zones, geological anomalies can be identified with LWD much sooner than through wireline runs. Will high quality real-time LWD measurements continue to displace wireline? Oliden Technology’s quad combo with imaging and geosteering sensors believes so!

At ESA Analytics, we’re currently integrating Oklahoma oil and gas data into our platform, and it is not an easy task. Right now, we're knee-deep in correlating PUNs (production ID) with APIs to figure out how much oil and gas each well produces. The goal here is to save our customers from these types headaches so they can get straight to the more interesting parts of their job. Zack Warren presented at the Society of Petroleum Evaluation Engineers luncheon in Houston this week and as usual brought his fastball. Great points around tech and analytics in reserves evaluation, but also around software and data in #oilandgas in general. He spent a good amount of time on the ‘big 6’ areas which are the core for any company. Starting with ERP, surrounded by production allocation, land, SCADA, reserves & planning, and well lifecyle. Not only are they key to how the business is run, but how they are handled and integrated is critical. These make up a solid base to Zack’s pyramid of data. How you gather and manage data has to be solid before you can ever get to descriptive and predictive analytics, or start getting value from AI and ML. At Quorum we call this the ‘digital core’ of a company and it's how we think about software and how to help companies achieve this. This is near and dear to my heart, and anyone who has spoken to me for 5 minutes has probably heard me ramble about the topic. Garbage in means garbage out, and being thoughtful with your processes and data is the unsexy but important piece to running an efficient and profitable business. It's Halloween and 500 more Texas oil and gas families are going out tonight facing a new threat. They could be laid off at any time in the upcoming months. That's more valuable talent whose company has said "Hit the road and do something else. We won't be needing your experience any more." There's exceptional technical capabilities embedded within Marathon Oil that ConocoPhillips feels like they already have covered and they're clearly not interested in expanding skills to new areas. Decisions like this drive me crazy. How long is it going to be before I hear a future CEO of a giant energy company complaining about a talent shortage?!? There's so many new opportunities in energy for chemical and petroleum engineers as well as geologists within oil and gas. To start with, we could ramp up geothermal energy resources and stop throwing away the valuable metals in the produced water. 500 families will remember how they were affected this Halloween. How many employees will say goodbye to energy for the last time as they walk out the door? I love spending time with people who've worked in the field on technical projects. We all know the importance of doing our job right so everyone goes home safely. That's something the world needs to know about. #oilandgas #mergers #talent

Unbelievable! The capital of energy, Houston, still with 1 million without electricity at home. We were one of the 2 MM lucky families in getting light back after 3 days of Beryl, a Category 1 hurricane. But 4 days and counting and no internet. What was terrifying is the day the hurricane hit Houston: no communication in and out was possible; no phones, no cells, no internet, barely couple of AM radio stations and one FM. None in emergency mode. And no news. It felt like one of those nuclear apocalypse movies but without the AM Emergency Alert System. The conclusion is that Texas is totally unprepared for any kind of mild catastrophe. A little bit colder and all the pipes burst, gas pipelines stop, become inoperable, and no electricity. An unusual heavy rain and we get at least two days blackouts. Try to imagine a Cat 5 hurricane! For many of us, it looks nobody is in charge of the state. Politicians instead of doing their jobs are pushing their agenda through our throats. I don’t know what practical benefit will bring mandating the Ten Commandments in all the schools besides pulverizing the religion freedom of others, when they should be listening and attending Texans real issues. #Texas #EmergencyAlertSystem #energy #Beryl #hurricane #Houston #blackout
