In my 3rd year of recruitment, I wanted to throw a big BBQ party in a NJ public park somewhere, due to a big portion of my clients/candidates living along the pharma corridor. This event was gonna be lit! Not only could I use it as a great way to regenerate my relationships and reconnect, pitch this event to new clients, our team could also leverage this event in their BD and candidate efforts. I had to get sign off from my new boss who had just arrived fresh off the boat from the UK a few months earlier. As I consistently hosted client and candidate events previously with no issue getting sign-off, I thought this approval process would be similarly a breeze. To my utmost surprise, instead of being supportive, he wanted me to go back to the drawing board and brainstorm other ideas my clients and candidates may like. He told me to consider perhaps a yacht party in the Hudson in dazzling Manhattan? Like, he wouldn't let it go. He was insistent that I should SURVEY my network first and ask them, would they rather go to a yacht party in Manhattan or a BBQ event in Jersey? Of course, only one of those options appealed to HIM as he was planning to come to this event. So you know what I did? I scrapped the whole idea! I know for a fact that my clients would HATE to cross the Lincoln, sit through traffic to go to some bougie yacht party when they could be enjoying the weekend locally with their families. And no, I wasn't going to run a survey to confirm this fact. Here's the deal: This new manager had not produced in quite some time. He's what we call a bureaucrat. A non-billing manager, a figurehead. And boy was he lucky. He got to inherit a very high producing team. Instead of continuing to support said team, he instead got in our way in many ways. So what? Let the producers make the calls. Once bureaucrats get in the way of billing, it's time to look outside the firm. DESCRIPTION / OVERVIEW: Manages high priority projects affecting three or more businesses or functional areas or most complex projects affecting multiple businesses or functional areas. Manages changes to project scope, schedule and costs using appropriate verification techniques to keep the project plan accurate, updated, reflective of authorized project changes as defined in the change management plan, and facilitate customer acceptance. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Lead and direct high priority projects impacting three or more businesses or functions, or most complex projects affecting multiple businesses or functional areas, often requiring considerable resources and high levels of functional integration from initiation to close. Projects may be of a technical and/or non-technical nature. Develop Project Plan, forecast and schedule. Work with stakeholders to record detailed project requirements, constraints and assumptions to establish project deliverables, using requirement-gathering techniques (e.g. planning sessions, brainstorming, focus groups) and the project charter. Ensure plans for assigned projects include work breakdown, project organization chart, cost/budget and communication, risk, quality and resource plans. Communicate project plans to affected parties to ensure a common understanding, set expectations and align stakeholders and project team members. Measure project performance utilizing appropriate tools and techniques to monitor progress; identify and quantify variances, complete any required corrective actions, and communicate to all stakeholders. Implement approved actions and workarounds required to mitigate project risk events. Improve project team performance by building team cohesiveness, leading, mentoring, training and motivating to facilitate cooperation, ensure project efficiency and boost morale.
