Flexible interconnection is becoming more popular as we integrate more distributed energy resources like batteries and solar panels into the grid. Local generation plants also play a key role in improving grid capacity, but connecting these diverse sources efficiently is a major challenge. The flexibility needed to manage these interconnections can drive up costs, and making sure the grid remains stable while balancing so many different inputs is no easy feat. Gary Agreed! Also, how do we justify paying for LEO services for qualified BSLs that already have access to LEO services? In Washington State over 95% of all BSLs have access to service from LEOs according to the FCC map. Now we will be using funds to bring services to BSLs that already have access to those services? Will we change the definition of served and include LEO in the evaluation? These are big questions that the State’s are going to need guidance from NTIA to answer.

Only a week late, but I'd like to share some of my major takeaways from Microgrid Knowledge's Conference in sunny Baltimore last week. 1. It remains a small world in the distributed energy space. If you work for more than one company in the industry, you feel like you know everybody. It was great running into current and former colleagues Kristel Watson, Lisa Khanna, Todd J.; and hosting a panel with Sonya Harbaugh, CEM, Philip Fischer, and Colby Cox. 2. Utilities are not the problem. I never said they were in the first place, but it's clear that all the utilities at MGK were there trying to be part of the solution in developing microgrids, not the problem. If you feel/ see differently...let me know! 3. One of my favorite lines talking about a solar array: "If you don't have a robust O&M plan your system could turn into playground equipment." A dangerous one, but I'm sure my kids would love to play on some solar panels. 4. Resiliency is top of mind and highly sought after, but utilities and organizations still have difficulty valuing it. There needs to be some standard metrics to valuing resiliency so we can easily account for it in project economics. 5. Microgrid Projects are still relatively small (sub 10MW), take a long time to contract and deliver (2+yrs) and still require a lot of funding to bring to life. There is tons of money (financing) available so that's not the problem. I believe we are still in the early adopters phase of microgrids, maybe on the edge of the chasm, I think we'll need standardization across microgrid platforms to help bring the market to scale. 6. NIMBYism (Not In My Back Yard) is as strong as ever. For as much as everyone talks about going green and being resilient, the fact is that most folks don't want a solar, wind, battery, or generator in the their backyard, and many are willing to fight it. This is hard one to solve, but for those of us in the #engergy industry, we need to lead by example and try to combat this in real time. Great insights by a CEO to explain what happened with the PJM capacity auction. Utilities that are short on generation are the ones affected by the outcome of higher prices. Thanks to T&D World for highlighting the CenterPoint Energy electric resiliency plan submitted last week to the Texas PUC. As T&D World notes, it's important that we resiliently provide #energyforwhatmattersmost to the greater Houston area: "The Greater Houston area is at risk of extreme weather events and continues to experience rapid population growth as well as strong economic expansion.  While the Greater Houston area incorporates about 2% of the geographic area of Texas, CenterPoint Energy's metered customers account for approximately 25% of the total electric load in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas region." https://lnkd.in/gWFptmNP

The need for rural broadband was brought to the forefront thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, not only are there STILL areas that are either not served, or underserved, the speeds available in some areas no longer cut it. For 65 million customers across 13 states and the Great Lakes region, this means higher electricity bills are on the horizon. 🌍⚡ Why? While Hurricane Ian is long gone since 2022, the tropical storm had a very long-lasting destructive impact on the town's network connectivity. The hurricane's landfall destroyed the Xfinity network. But Comcast didn't back down. Within 48 hours, my company initiated the rebuild to restore service, enabling our customers to get back online. In 2024, our commitment to Sanibel's community continues by providing internet access that is now more resilient, robust and secure thanks to a major investment. Comcast recently completed over $72 million in work to restore connectivity and fortify its Xfinity network in Southwest Florida following Hurricane Ian's impact. "Our commitment to this vibrant community runs deep. This network infrastructure is a big deal and we're proud to be actively investing in Sanibel and other parts of Southwest Florida.
