No one ever told you it will be so hard to get your first client than to get your 100th client. There are so many "achievement posts" that you've seen here. You start to wonder what's going on? Why haven't you gotten any client yet? Come close. You are selling to an audience that doesn't know you. The audience doesn't even trust you enough to provide the solutions they need. You randomly accept any connection request without "strategic networking". You bring the figures and facts but no storytelling to spice it up. DMs conversations seem to be a big, hard hassle (let's not even talk about the copy-paste messages, I've been there). Your profile is not optimized neither does it has a clear CTA (right now, you are even asking what the hell is that? You haven't discovered what sets you apart (how then do you intend to convince the leads that come to you?) Roy, it's not by shouting "sales, sales" everyday on your posts. Your audience won't care. Strategy??? That's a different story. That word seems foreign. You follow the crowd wherever they go. John posted 6 - figures, you are about to do the same. Upskill? No! Improve? No! Self-investment? I've got an unfair advantage. My secret? I'm a conversion copywriter, but I'm also a registered dietitian, a diabetes educator, and a lactation consultant with more than 20 year's of hands-on experience. After thousands of conversations with people seeking to improve their health, I've got an unfair advantage. I draw on that experience to inform my content and copy. The best writing advice I have to repeat to myself every day... Show your audience what you mean, don't just tell them! (Ugh, but why is it so much easier to just TELL you?) Telling is...boring. Wait, wait, no. Telling is a...yawn fest. Showing you something takes... Curiosity Relatability Observation Introspection Showing you requires me to imagine what something... Looks like Smells like Tastes like Sounds like Feels like It requires more of me, but it turns out it's far more fulfilling. To practice, I try to write a poem every day using the guesses from my Wordle game. (Nerd alert 🤓 ) The other day, the word was Swish. it sounds like snow pants interrupting my soft winter's day it tastes like mouthwash dancing like jazz throughout my decay it looks like a jump shot welcoming whispers of luck for my play it smells like grape barrels noting my buds with a cherry's foreplay it feels like a swish... I think that checks out so I'll simplify mood with this swoosh on my route (PS, not my best poem 😅 But for more nonsense poems, go to wordle.poem on instagram) *** Next time your writing feels like a yawn fest, try this simple exercise of asking yourself... What does this idea feel like? What does this idea look like? What does this idea taste like? What does this idea smell like? What does this idea sound like? What picture can I paint for someone? “I’ll fill my health program as soon as I fix my website… write my email sequence… start my newsletter.” I hear this all the time from practitioners. For sure, seeing your website or emails come together can feel like a huge accomplishment. But unless they’re aligned with what your ideal client believes, needs and wants, that feeling won’t last. No marketing strategy or piece of copy can work if it isn’t grounded in a deep understanding of the people it’s meant to help. That’s why client interviews are so powerful. They reveal the reasons client’s hesitate to join your program, the deeper motivations that inspire them to say yes, and the small but significant steps that help them feel ready to commit. More often than not, what you assume is holding clients back or moving them forward… isn’t the full story. Client interviews give you the language and perspective you need to connect with the people you want to join your health program. Take Emily for example. When we first met, she was struggling to convert her email subscribers into paying clients for her health program. She knew her clients were busy professional women in their 50’s struggling with ongoing exhaustion. She focused her content on practical tips for exercise, stress management, and nutrition. While her advice was valuable, it wasn’t motivating her subscribers to join. After interviewing her clients, she discovered something surprising… Prior to working with her, many had believed feeling exhausted was just a part of being over 50. Some had even been told, since their lab work was “normal”, that fatigue was a natural part of aging. Exhausted and frustrated they’d questioned “Why spend money on something that’s due to age?” Armed with this insight, Emily shifted her messaging. She told stories of clients who after working with her took up hiking, dancing, and living very active lives. She highlighted studies proving fatigue isn’t a natural part of aging, and leaned into their frustration of being told nothing was wrong—meeting them where they were at. Within 3 months, her program sign-ups doubled. Emily’s story is a perfect reminder that effective messaging starts with truly understanding your clients. If you haven’t yet taken the time to interview your clients about their beliefs, frustrations, and hopes as they relate to your program and the transformation it provides, start there.  Any particular clients come to mind? How Kendall created consistent $25k+ months and 2Xed her revenue as a content ghostwriter Before we started working together, Kendall was knee-deep in her Google docs — writing all the client work and copy editing every piece of content herself. The only problem? Kendall was a fully-booked ghostwriter and was booking +2-3 months in advance. Her income was capped at ~$15k per month while spending too much time cleaning up her copy and content so it not only sounded clear but was free of the typos and other spinach that Grammarly and spell check couldn’t quite catch for her. Kendall is also a self-proclaimed “content creation machine” and would write upwards of half a book’s worth (~40k words) each month for her clients and her own marketing content. What’s worse is that copy editing was one of Kendall’s most dreaded tasks… …sometimes tacking on AN ENTIRE DAY just to review the content she’d written before sending to a client. Which is right about the time she called me… …so she could get all of that red-pen editing off her plate and could get back to her zone of genius (and her highest revenue-generating task): The WRITING. In the same month of hiring me, Kendall’s one-woman copywriting business: ▶ Negotiated bigger deals at 2-4X her "regular" rate without worrying if she had the bandwidth to write + edit everything ▶ Let go of the need to be a one-stop-shop for content strategy + copy editing + dang good writing ▶ Built a repeatable, 24-week email content library so she could 100% automate her email marketing ▶ Created the content ops structure for consistent $25k+ months without becoming an agency or managing a huge team She just had *someone else* make sure she had crystal clear copy and content before sending it to clients… …instead of spending her time refining what she’d already written. This is one of the biggest mistakes I've corrected in my copywriting: It's writing as if you’re talking to an audience. For example, I used to write stuff like this: "We all know that eating well isn't easy." Or... "Many people have a problem understanding money." That's writing to a group, rather than one person. And it's a big mistake, as the reader doesn't feel you're addressing their specific concerns and problems. Instead, copy should feel personal - as if you're talking to someone one on one. That's how you make a connection and keep them reading. So: "You know eating well isn't easy." "You probably have a problem understanding money – you’re not alone." When you hire a ghostwriter (or an agency) to write content for you, don't expect the first draft to be perfect. Especially early on in the relationship. But even deep into the relationship, a first draft is just that. A first draft. The writer isn't the expert. You are. Their job is to move the project forward. Help you translate your expertise onto the page. Organize your thoughts. So, don't get frustrated if there is room for improvement. I'd be worried if there weren't. Provide helpful feedback. Jump on a call to talk through what's missing and what could be improved. And then let your writers focus on a v2, which should be vastly better. Do you greet your customers when they come into your dispensary? Or do you ignore them completely and hope they buy something? It’d be weird if someone came into your shop to buy some weed and no one greeted them or asked what they could help with, right? So why don’t you greet your customers when they sign up for your email list? It’s the digital version of someone visiting your store for the first time. Welcome emails have some of the highest open and conversion rates of any email you’ll send; your new subscriber’s interest in your brand is at its highest when they first sign up. It’s your job to leverage that heightened interest, and get that first sale ASAP. Automate a welcome series to introduce your new sub to your brand, show them what makes you different, and encourage a sale. Here’s an outline for a 5-email welcome series that does just that: ✨ Email #1. Sent immediately after sign up: ✨ Welcome them to your brand, thank them for signing up, offer a new-sub discount. *Optional: Include an *also optional* product preference survey for an additional reward. Use answers for segmentation. ✨ Email #2. Sent 2 days after sign up: ✨ Brief brand story - Share unique selling points, show how you're different. Don’t list features, show benefits. ✨ Email #3. Sent 2 days after email #2: ✨ Social proof, testimonials, customer stories. Always answering the question “Why should I buy from you?” ✨ Email #4. Sent 2 days after email #3: ✨ Introduce loyalty program: Your loyalty program HAS to be good. You’ve already told them why they should buy from you once, now show them why they’ll never wanna go anywhere else. Exclusivity sells here. ✨ Email #5. Sent 1 day after email #4: ✨ Final offer; last push to get that first sale (for now). Use additional discount or prize to try to get those undecided smokers! The point of your welcome series isn’t only to make a sale; you want to make a strong first impression so they remember you in the future. You do this by showing how they will benefit by becoming a customer (not with bigger discounts). But the sooner you make the first sale, the sooner you can start segmenting your new subs.
