One of my favorite humans Bobbi Buell included this article in her amazing newsletter today and I had to highlight it here. I get a LOT of outreach from #RCM solutions vendors who are looking to automate so much around the tedious appeals process. #Technology is so powerful IF you have the right data inputs and PEOPLE to drive it. The RCM staff are the hidden gems 💎 within the health system and they are often overlooked because we sit in the back, usually far away from clinical care. Trust me, most of us don't want to be amongst the clinical heroes 🦸‍♀️ on the front line. We are detectives, number crunchers, and problem solvers. We get lost in the charts and numbers trying to balance complicated checks with future 'takebacks' (what the heck!?). I digress. Random tips to prevent denials aside from #justdoit: 1. Invest in reviewing payer policies BEFORE THE SERVICE occurs. I see so much lost revenue with the mentality that the "billing" team will just take care of it. We can create miracles, sometimes, but not all the time. Help us help you! 🆘 2. Invest in educating your RCM team with WHY services are being performed. What is the clinical necessity behind it and where does it get documented? I understand we aren't clinical but we have to play it on TV a lot when calling health plans for prior auths so break it down for us, and those on the other end of the line that are also (usually) NOT clinical. 3. Set templates and procedures for your appeal processes. Review the payer policies and extract what the health plan requires for the service and think like them: what will they need to justify the service, when do certain tests need to be performed to demonstrate medical necessity, etc. Put yourself in the health plans shoes and ask yourself "if I was the health plan, what excuse do I have to not pay if I sent in this service?" Random thoughts from a very passionate human (me) who just wants to see people get paid for their well-earned work. Excellent read. One of my favorites is below. I know with those that either do not work in or in support of healthcare systems; the fact that most are operating with negative margins is often surprising. “Craig Kent, MD. CEO of UVA Health; Executive Vice President of Health Affairs at University of Virginia (Charlottesville): One of the most pervasive myths I encounter is about healthcare margins. It seems people outside the healthcare industry and even our own team members believe healthcare systems are making significant margins and have plenty of cash. In reality, our health system margins are thin, if they exist at all. People hear that healthcare is a $4 trillion business in the United States and accounts for 18% of gross domestic product and they assume healthcare systems are the beneficiaries of that wealth. In truth, the top three pharmaceutical companies in 2023 recorded record revenue of $63 billion combined, and the largest insurers in the U.S. made more than $40 billion.“

https://lnkd.in/epcXuFNy The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) approved an amendment to Vermont’s section 1115 demonstration, “Global Commitment to Health.” Approval gives the state authority to provide health-related social needs (HRSN) services and infrastructure support, close the Substance Used Disorder (SUD) Community Intervention and Treatment (CIT) coverage gap by expanding eligibility for the CIT expansion group for eligible beneficiaries up to and including 225 percent of the federal poverty level (FPL), expand Developmental Disabilities Services benefits, and support transition of most Community Rehabilitation and Treatment (CRT) and Mental Health Under 22 services currently covered under the demonstration to the Medicaid state plan.

AI agents that could massively reduce the costs of pre-op and post-op communication in healthcare? -> "Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff suggested that Agentforce can help healthcare customers slash the costs of pre-op and post-op communication by upwards of 98% The story emerged during the Q&A portion of the call when Benioff was asked about how Salesforce intends to price its agents (it’ll be consumption pricing at $2.00 per call). Benioff mentioned that he’s wearing a boot because he recently ruptured his Achilles tendon while on a scuba-diving trip to celebrate his birthday. 'So I got a call from my hospital telling me that I’m coming in to get scheduled for another MRI,' he said. 'And at the end of the call — it was kind of pre-operative care and then there’ll be another call for post-operative care and so forth — I was just saying to myself, ‘Wow, what did that cost them?’ 'And they just don’t have enough people as it is — their doctors are already burned out, their nurses are burned out. I talk to those folks all the time and there’s a lot of pajama time for all these doctors — that’s what they call it because they’re all working late at night at home with their families, trying to get through all of their messages,' Benioff said. 'Everybody is maxed out at UCSF. I mean, it’s an incredible org, but I can’t believe the amount that they have to do with such a limited workforce. And then while I got this call, I said to myself, ‘They kind of know all of this already about me. They’ve got all of my data, they have all of my care, they have my family history. They’ve got all my scans. They can have an agent do this work. 'And that call probably cost them $100 — and it didn’t have to happen. I think [Agentforce] could have done the call for probably about $1.50. 'And I think that is the message to our customers, which is how are you going to give some of your people a break, let them get back to their strategic work, let them focus on what really matters to their customers? 'And some of the work that’s a little bit more administrative and bureaucratic and political that’s done by these political layers or higher levels that’s like, you know what, I think that could have happened with an agent,' Benioff continued. 'That’s kind of how I look at it.
