Having been a long time aviation nerd, it's not my intent or desire to jump on the Boeing bashing bandwagon, but recent events have provided a critical opportunity for the industry to reflect and redirect. To all my colleagues at Boeing- please use this as an opportunity to lead the way out! Take away the names of the companies involved and these three key points stand out to me: 1) There is no substitute for floor walks. Leadership (especially Quality Leaders) should be a reassuring presence on the shop floor, not an alarming one. There is no power point, email or meeting you can have in your office that will inform you as much as walking you shop floors on a regular basis. 2) "Off-loading" is a self-deceiving approach to risk management. Regardless of who you sub parts production out to, if your logo is going on the final product, you still own all the risks associated with that part. If your brand is important, why would you ever put it in the hands of the lowest bidder? 3) The Share Holder Supremacy model (and the executive incentives that drive it) needs to change. Focus on delivering quality to your customer and the customer will take care of the share holders. I don't blame the executives here- they did what they were incentivized to do. Companies need to decide if they want to play by finite game theory or infinite game theory. There are great examples of both and how they work out in the long run. Quarter to quarter is no way to run a railroad...

🚀 Balancing Tradition and Innovation in Aerospace Quality 🚀 Recently, my 5-year-old son asked me, "Papa, what do you do at Boeing?" This simple question led to a profound conversation about my role as a Regional Manager managing supplier quality, and it got me thinking about how to explain it in a way that's simple yet meaningful. I told him, "Imagine we Quality Folks are like a superhero for quality at Boeing. Just like superheroes ensure everything is safe and perfect, we make sure all the parts we use to make airplanes are also safe and perfect. It's like assembling a perfect puzzle so airplanes can fly safely in the sky." His curious mind didn't stop there. He asked how come airplanes looker nicer now than the older airplanes and if new airplanes are healthier then old airplanes?.. I paused for a moment and asked him, why are you asking this question.. he then citing his grandpa's view on old farming practices being healthier that current day farming. His question resonated deeply, sparking reflections on the balance between tradition and innovation in aerospace quality. While we celebrate technological advancements in the aerospace industry, my son's question made me pause and reflect: Are these advancements truly enhancing quality? Are defect rates improving? may be- yes! but... long way to go I guess! His perspective reminded me of the importance of going back to basics in Aerospace Quality Management. Just as old farming methods can offer valuable insights, revisiting timeless quality practices may enhance safety and reliability in aerospace. As we embrace innovation, let's not forget the wisdom of the past. Jet-engine manufacturers are experiencing record financial success even as their products face significant durability issues, raising concerns in the aviation industry. Shares in RTX Corporation soared after the company exceeded second-quarter earnings forecasts, with its Pratt & Whitney division seeing a 23% rise in operating profit. Similarly, GE Aerospace reported high demand for spare parts, pushing its stock to a 16-year high. European manufacturers Rolls-Royce and Safran are also expected to report strong results, despite the widespread problems affecting their engines. The Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan (GTF) and the LEAP engine by CFM International are both facing significant durability problems. Issues such as powder-metal defects in the GTF have grounded hundreds of Airbus A320neo aircraft. Maintenance visits have become longer, exacerbated by a shortage of spare parts and a reduction in experienced staff during the pandemic. GE's production of the LEAP engine has also slowed, affecting aircraft assembly and orders for Boeing and Airbus. These challenges highlight the misalignment of incentives in the jet-engine manufacturing business. Engines are often sold at a loss, with profits made in the aftermarket of maintenance, repairs, and overhauls. This business model benefits manufacturers when maintenance becomes more frequent and new engine production slows. However, it also creates reluctance to develop new, more efficient engines, as manufacturers are incentivized to prolong the lifespan of existing models. While engine manufacturers face compensation claims from airlines due to grounded aircraft, the complexity of modern engines and the substantial upfront costs of development contribute to longer production cycles. This situation has led to tension between engine makers and their customers, with plane manufacturers like Airbus frustrated by the persistent delays. The more the merrier. Like said many times before. There is no eV demand crisis, there is a Tesla demand crisis. EVs are just doing fine. In the US and in Europe. In China they are doing more than fine. Way more. The „ exponential growth“ story was always due to early market. Now that the early adopters are supplied, growth is steady. NEWS 📰 #GEAerospace was awarded a production contract for Integrated Data Acquisition Recorder (IDAR) systems for the United States Air Force (USAF) fleet of 396 KC-135 aircraft. Under the contract, GE Aerospace will upgrade the existing IDAR and incorporate advanced components with new growth capabilities GE Aerospace will begin deliveries to the USAF in 2026 and will continue through 2031.
