BiVACOR® Implants First-in-Human Total Artificial Heart at The Texas Heart Institute as a bridge to heart transplant Houston, Texas, July 25, 2024 – The Texas Heart Institute (THI) and BiVACOR®, a clinical-stage medical device company, announced today the successful first-in-human implantation of the BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart (TAH) as part of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Early Feasibility Study (EFS). BiVACOR’s TAH is a titanium-constructed biventricular rotary blood pump with a single moving part that utilizes a magnetically levitated rotor that pumps the blood and replaces both ventricles of a failing heart. The first-in-human clinical study aims to evaluate the safety and performance of the BiVACOR TAH as a bridge-to-transplant solution for patients with severe biventricular heart failure or univentricular heart failure in which left ventricular assist device support is not recommended. Following this first implantation completed at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in the Texas Medical Center, four additional patients are to be enrolled in the study. “The Texas Heart Institute is enthused about the groundbreaking first implantation of BiVACOR’s TAH. If you're a refractive surgeon, your biggest competitor is not your neighbor down the street. It's indifference and lack of awareness. I receive google news alerts on a variety of topics and this one in Forbes caught me by surprise yesterday morning. How is it possible that 𝟮𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿, we are still addressing the basic questions about LASIK? This is an unfortunate example of how we as an industry (surgeons, manufacturers and other stakeholders) have done a terrible job of educating the public on the benefits of vision correction procedures. — The DA Fluoro Exception? — Jameil ‘Jay’ Pendleton™ made a great observation about reps get flack for driving expensive cars unless it’s a $120k truck.. the Texas Truck Exception. Is there a similar thing going on with Direct Anterior surgeons that use Fluoro but give surgeons that use “other tech” like nav or robotics a hard time? We act like Fluoro isn’t “technological assistance”, which seems weird to me. You can find studies like this PMID: 32211483 that find no benefit to cup or femoral implant placement with Fluoro in the DA vs DA without And the lowest cost for fluoro in a case I can find is about 350$ - hard number to find because it’s not as obvious a cost as a bill from a robot’s disposables It seems like it gets an exemption for 2 reasons: 1) it’s older tech, which gives it a sense of “proven” 2) costs are not as obvious as a bill from a vendor Or do you think Fluoro is in a different category? #orthopedics #jointreplacement #sales #roboticsurgery #healthcare
