I am in awe, and humbled, by the skill of the Israeli and American missile defense teams, who likely saved tens of thousands of lives yesterday. I can't imagine... the terror in the shelters. The sounds of explosions overhead. And what it must feel like, as an air and missile defender, to know that you can't afford to screw it up. Yesterday is a sobering reminder of what's truly at stake, and why the work we do in Aerospace & Defense matters. I've spent years of my life successfully combatting disinformation about missile defense — whether it was Russian propaganda in Europe, or pseudo-scientific claims spread by "useful idiots" here in the U.S. But watching yesterday's events play out wasn't gratifying. It was terrifying. Because A&D communications isn't a game. Thousands of lives are on the line. If poor decisions are made because of disinformation and the wrong system -- or no system -- is purchased, there are real world consequences. Communications lesson? I dunno... The fact is, that's not what I'm thinking about right now. What I'm really thinking about are the broader geo-political implications. And the practical side of things... things, like magazine depth and the cost-per-kill equation... How fast can our adversaries churn out missiles and drones? How quickly can the U.S. and its allies field interceptors? And at what point does the math of using expensive interceptors to shoot down cheap ballistic missiles, start catching up? Smarter minds than mine are working on this problem set. But that -- and the expertise and dedication of the men and women who saved so many lives -- is what I'm thinking about over my morning coffee.

This forward module validation test is interesting. Our four fins on New Glenn are about the size of a car—roughly 16 feet long at the base and sticking out 6.5 feet from the body of the rocket. They’re responsible for steering the rocket on ascent and descent. Most of the structure is aluminum, which is protected from reentry heating by a durable fabric thermal protection system we invented and refer to internally as ‘Comet.’ The aerodynamic forces pushing on the fin during flight are roughly equal to the weight of a 737 aircraft. Blue Origin

🚀🔧 The Future of Manufacturing: Additive Technologies at NASA 🔧🚀 The widespread commercial adoption of additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D printing, is no surprise to design engineers at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Their research has created stronger, lighter materials and innovative manufacturing processes for rocket parts. NASA’s RAMPT (Rapid Analysis and Manufacturing Propulsion Technology) project is at the forefront of additive manufacturing, helping produce new alloys and 3D-printed parts. Paul Gradl, the project’s co-principal investigator at NASA Marshall, highlights the rigorous approach: “Our underlying strength is in our application of extremely durable and severe environment materials and innovative manufacturing for component design. We strive to fully understand the microstructure and properties of every material before we make them available to industry for flight applications.” The meticulous process of building components one layer at a time ensures precision and strength, paving the way for future space exploration and industry innovation. I am happy that Lite Magnesium is sending 6 Magnesium samples on the MISSIE 21 Launch with NASA, in collaboration with SpaceX, in October to evaluate the resilience of magnesium-based alloys in the on-orbit space environment, the response of lightweight magnesium alloys suitable for aerospace applications to atomic oxygen, thermal cycling, and vacuum will be quantified. In a recent interview with Paul Brinkmann of Aerospace America, a publication of AIAA, we get into some of the finer what-if details of #AAMInfrastructure standards and fire code. Understanding that this is an area of technology that is evolving daily and that what we knew yesterday is often different than what we understand today, developing standards and codes in this ever-changing landscape requires constant input from all stakeholders. SpaceX Raptor 3 schematic: The oxygen preburner has been revised and its location updated for clarity and efficiency. Fluid colors have been changed to enhance visibility and distinguishability. The methane (CH4) autogen flowpath has been corrected to resolve previous inaccuracies. Specification numbers have been updated and corrected. More labels and iconography have been added to highlight smaller features, improving the diagram's detail. The powerhead regen channels, as far as current knowledge allows, have been included in the diagram. Helium spinstart has been replaced with nitrogen for starting the engine. Flow paths between the powerhead have been cleaned up to improve legibility. Discrepancies and Uncertainties: The exact source of the CH4 autogen remains unclear. It could either come from the outlet of the methane powerhead autogen through the hot gas manifold or directly from the valve assembly on the transfer tube from the lower regen manifold to the top of the LOX powerhead. Unfortunately, due to the lack of clear photos of this engine section, the precise origin cannot be confirmed. The type of ignitors used for the preburners is unknown. Traditional torch ignitors seem unlikely due to the engine's operation, yet the presence of Gox/CH4 inlets on the common umbilical suggests some form of ignition system requiring these gases. The number of turbines on each powerhead is not definitively known. Evidence from debris suggests there might be two turbines per powerhead, indicated by the size of the turboshaft coupling, but this has not been confirmed. The starting point of the CH4 powerhead regen is ambiguous. It might connect directly to the chamber regen loop or start at the end of the transfer tube as shown in the diagram. The exact conditions of methane post-regeneration through the nozzle and chamber are not fully known, but it is theorized to remain sufficiently "cool" for use in regenerative cooling. One of the really awesome things we've learned recently via simulation is that the so-called "Rotating Wall" technique from Penning trap science (https://lnkd.in/gT3gD-rd) also works in Orbitrons and can be used to stabilize both ion and electron rotating modes. Essentially this involves splitting up the walls into azimuthal sections and using phase lagged sinusoidal voltages so that the plasma sees "a rotating wall" which can be used to apply torques to the plasma and speed up or slow down the particles. This is super cool and a really big deal for future Orbitron plasma stability control! Video below of a simulation we did recently using rotating electric fields to stabilize a ring of electrons confined in an Orbitron.

Payload activation is now underway following the successful completion of the commissioning phase of LizzieSat-1 (LS-1) by Sidus Space. The Payload operations phase aims to fulfill customer needs, goals, and objectives while optimizing LizzieSat-1 performance to achieve mission success within required power, thermal, attitude control, and data downlink constraints. Sidus expects to achieve primary objectives in the coming weeks.

As the hikers saying goes in my neck of the woods (pun alert!) "Leave no trace". Time to extend that mentality to space. You can't contribute to orbital debris if you don't leave anything in orbit. Orbotic Systems Inc D3 drag device provides satellites with a safe and predictable way to deorbit. The D3 is a mechanical device so it can replace propellant as the main way to deorbit, serve as a failsafe in the event of prop malfunction, or in some cases, can extend mission life by allowing prop to be used entirely for mission and controlling the deorbit to collect additional data on the way down.
