April 24, 2024. Micron to receive roughly $6.14 billion in direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act to boost U.S. competitiveness in leading-edge memory semiconductor production. The proposed funding would support the construction of two leading-edge Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM) fabs in New York, the first step in Micron’s two-decade vision to invest approximately $100 billion in New York and create roughly 13,500 facility and construction jobs. In addition, the proposed funding would unlock a $25 billion investment in a DRAM fab in Idaho, which will be co-located with Micron’s R&D facilities in Boise and create approximately 6,500 facility and construction jobs. Quest Pro Eye Tracking Accuracy Update Recently came across a new paper by Oleg Komogortsev's lab at Texas State University that reported accuracy of Quest Pro eye tracking (https://lnkd.in/gdxe6rTm). I really like the detailed analysis across population and spatial error percentiles. I think this should be setting industry standard for reporting eye tracking performance. Good news for Quest Pro users: Meta rolled out new eye-tracking model in recent June (v66) update. According to our internal benchmarking, the E95 error is reduced by ~25-30%+ across the population vs numbers reported in the paper (which are based on data collected back in 2023). The bad news are that this is likely the last eye-tracking model update for Quest Pro. But as our CEO alluded to, eye tracking sensors are coming back in future Quest devices (https://lnkd.in/gVPRC-XC). So stay tuned!

Intel's upcoming Panther Lake processors will feature a significant increase in in-house silicon, reaching over 70%. This shift will positively impact the company's profit margins. However, while the majority of Panther Lake's silicon will be internal, some tiles will still be sourced externally. The company's next-generation Nova Lake CPUs, slated for 2026, are expected to see even greater internalization of silicon production. While this will further boost Intel's margins, the extent of this improvement will vary across different Nova Lake SKUs. Some models will rely heavily on Intel's own manufacturing processes, while others may still incorporate externally sourced components. Like many modern Arm based SoCs, the Zynq Ulrascale+ is equipped with an internal watchdog timer. Unlike other devices which typically have just one, the ZU+ boasts three distinct watchdog timers. Major capacitor breakthrough for microelectronics... Scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and UC Berkeley have created "microcapacitors" that allow integrating energy storage directly onto microchips, minimizing energy losses that occur when power is transferred between different components. The idea isn't new, but current #technology struggles to meet the requirements of storing sufficient energy in a compact space while delivering it rapidly. Made from engineered thin films of hafnium oxide and zirconium oxide, the capacitors employ materials and fabrication techniques commonly used in chip manufacturing. However, their ability to store significantly more energy than ordinary capacitors is down to the use of negative capacitance materials. Capacitors store energy in an electric field established between two metallic plates separated by a dielectric material (non-metallic substance). They deliver power quickly and have longer lifespans than batteries, which use electrochemical reactions. These benefits come at the cost of significantly lower energy densities, which is exacerbated when shrinking them down to microcapacitor sizes for on-chip energy storage. The researchers overcame this by engineering thin films of HfO2-ZrO2 to achieve a negative capacitance effect. By tuning the composition, they were able to get the material to be easily polarized by even a small electric field. To scale up the energy storage capability of the films, the team placed atomically thin layers of aluminum oxide every few layers of HfO2-ZrO2. This allowed them to grow the films up to 100 nm thick while retaining the desired properties. These films were integrated into 3-D microcapacitor structures, achieving record-breaking properties: nine times higher energy density and 170 times higher power density compared to the best electrostatic capacitors. Inspire Semiconductor, Inc., is developing an AI chip called Thunderbird that features 1,536 custom #riscv CPU cores, high-speed memory, and low-latency networking. The chip has a performance capacity of up to 24 TFLOPS with energy efficiency of 75 GFLOPS/watt, resulting in reduced energy consumption by 30-60%. Tapeout was June 2024. I consider this big news, as I'm always excited at non-GPU approaches to AI acceleration, especially using the RISC-V ISA!
