The workplace is evolving, and so is the conversation around mental health. Grateful to The Deal Board Podcast for highlighting this critical topic and for including me in the discussion. Millennials and Gen Z are leading the charge in recognizing the importance of mental health support in the workplace. #Latinas must be a top business priority. A new report by #LeanIn Report reveals that Latinas are the least represented group in corporate America, with only 1% of C-suite executives being Latinas. This disparity starts at the entry level, where only 5% of employees are Latina compared to their 9% representation in the U.S. population. Throughout their career progression, Latinas experience a 78% drop-off in representation—the largest among any group. The report highlights the challenges Latinas face, including disparities in managerial support. For instance, 39% of Latinas feel their managers show interest in their career advancement, compared to 46% of white women. Addressing these disparities is crucial, as 44% of Latinas have stated that career advancement is increasingly important to them, and 87% are interested in being promoted. These findings underscore the pressing need for organizations to implement comprehensive strategies to promote gender and racial equity. Addressing the issues faced by Latinas in the workplace will require a concerted effort to tackle unconscious bias and foster supportive relationships. As a daughter of immigrants, being the first in my family to navigate the education system, higher ed and the white collar work force made me super adaptable to changing environments. As being the only women of color in the room became a common thing, and my mentors along the way made that path so much smoother for me. People like Professor Megan Ybarra, Professor Jonneke Koomen, Dr. Maria Teresa Chavez-Haroldson, Ph.D., Shelli Romero, MPA, OPMCP, Reyna Lopez and Susan Boreliz are influential people that helped me see the power in being rooted in my culture and not be afraid to lead. Here are some my favorite leadership lessons that have been top of mind for me recently: 1. Servant leadership is about leading with the heart and working with people that bring you joy 2. Overcoming hurdles makes you more stronger and capable 3. Challenges don’t define us but how we respond, does 4. Engaging women entrepreneurs is not just about working with more women; it is about tailoring approaches to traditional methods to reduce barriers like limited land access, time poverty and lack of technical resources. That is why I am SO excited about the work our Nepal team is doing with Tricho-vermicomposting. "Tricho-vermicomposting presented a unique opportunity for women entrepreneurs. It is a low-cost, low-tech, and low-labor activity that does not require large capital investment or high level of physical effort, making it ideal for women who may have limited access to resources or time due to household responsibilities."
