- Let's break down the advantages and disadvantages of each style of podcast. We're talking major genres here, audio, video, and screen casting. We'll begin with audio. Audio podcasts are relatively affordable to produce. All you need is a microphone and a recording device. To be perfectly honest, you could produce one with any modern smartphone without even a microphone. Just use your headset or even talk right into the phone and use the built-in recorder. There are, in fact, podcast apps that will allow you to podcast right from your phone. They're much less complex. You don't need to figure out how to edit video. You don't need to understand how to focus a camera, and you have a lot less equipment to learn.
