Similar to the tremendous amount of giving that occurs in the last quarter of the calendar year, the first quarter of the new year is an exceptionally active time for donors fulfilling their New Year’s resolutions, including one in particular—revisiting their estate plans. This period of time may have an immense future impact on your health care organization and involves donors and/or their advisors reaching out to request specific information that will bring their planning to fruition. For many philanthropy officers, this can be an anxiety-producing time that gives pause to an important question; a question that can be pivotal in the relationship between donors and the organization; a question based in trust and honesty: “Do we, or do we not, ask our donors to document their legacy intentions with us?” Check out this piece by Accordant Principal Consultant James Gold as he delves into answering this important question: https://ow.ly/x3Lr50RHUN7 #healthcare #philanthropy #donors

The biggest hurdle for philanthropy officers is their own personal lack of confidence around the subject when talking with donors. Too often they put the cart before the horse and feel they first need to know everything there is to know about planned giving, which is nearly impossible. Read more from Accordant's James Gold to discover some common misconceptions about starting a planned giving program and how organizations can shift their focus toward building a culture of planned giving that will yield long-lasting results. Trust is at an all-time low in our country. Because trust is at the core of philanthropy efforts, it is imperative that health care philanthropy teams address this unfortunate trend. A lack of trust leads to patients not seeking care, not believing they are receiving the best care possible, not investing in their hospitals for fear their money won’t be used wisely and even unwillingness to help neighbors to effect change for the better. There is, however, encouraging news. Those of us in philanthropy can combat this growing trend of distrust and move the needle to a more positive state. We are natural connectors and relationship builders. Let’s use our innate skills to turn this trend around. Read more about building trust with philanthropic partners in this piece from Accordant's Pamela Ronka Maroulis, FAHP, CFRE: https://ow.ly/4ati50TnT0K #healthcare #philanthropy #trust

Which came first—the campaign or the case? Campaigns play a crucial role in elevating giving and program performance for organizations. Philanthropy without campaigning is akin to training for a marathon but never running the race. However, the traditional approach of waiting for a fully articulated strategic plan before constructing a case can lead to missed opportunities. Instead, adopting an organic approach, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s philosophy of unity between form and function can lead to more effective campaigning. Philanthropy is joyous, life-affirming and noble work, but sometimes it is just plain hard. People and relationships can be tricky, so if philanthropy is based on relationships, why would it be easy all the time? However, the trenches of philanthropy can provide great opportunities for strategizing. They can provide time to regroup and often provide protection from the many barriers we relentlessly face. Protective trenches often demand close quarters with folks who share a common cause or vision while providing a great chance to bond. Those tiny spaces can also provide some hard-won truths. So, what truths have you learned while in the trenches of philanthropy?
