What a fun and insightful night on Thursday! Thanks to University of Melbourne Biotechnology Club for hosting a fabulous ‘speed dating’ networking event - while I hope I have given some insights into the IP profession, I learned something too: there is a new generation of motivated biotech undergrads and masters students who love science but want to work in science adjacent industry from the outset, rather than pursue traditional laboratory research first and then branch out. So, to my industry peers: How do we help them to help us progress our industry now, while they are motivated and driven, without imposing onerous research requirements (like having a PhD) for roles where although it may be tradition, it is not strictly necessary? 💡

6th International PhDays Conference: A Forum for Early-Career Researchers The PhDays Conference, taking place March 5-7, 2025, at the Ingenio (CSIC-UPV) facilities in València, Spain, is an event designed by and for PhD students. It offers early-career researchers a supportive environment to share their work, enhance communication skills and receive feedback from peers and senior academics. This year’s theme, Re-focusing Innovation: Governance Frames, Innovation Ecosystems, and Co-creation Networks, will encourage discussions on innovative governance strategies, dynamic innovation ecosystems and interdisciplinary networks to tackle social, environmental and economic challenges. The main topics include boundary-pushing innovation and new ways of generating innovation. Call for Contributions: Researchers are invited to submit a bio and abstract (up to 1,500 words) no later than December 6, 2024. Abstracts must be submitted in English and should include the title of the contribution, main research objectives, research questions, methodology and key findings or expected results. Applicants will also need to specify which of the conference themes best aligns with their contribution. After the event, the conference proceedings will be published online. "Re-focusing Innovation: Governance Frames, Innovation Ecosystems and Co-creation Networks" A three-day event, organized by PhD students for PhD students, providing early career researchers with an opportunity to present their work in a comfortable environment, improve their communication skills, and receive feedback from fellow PhD students and senior researchers. Although this is not explicitly mentioned in the Call, the International PhDays 2025 Conference welcomes submissions from the field of art-science and society (deadline Dec 6th). Funding opportunity for your research project: HALRIC welcomes life science projects that work cross-border and will utilise at least one research infrastructure in the Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak-Hamburg region. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with upcoming deadlines on 17 September and 28 November.   The Hanseatic Life Science Research Infrastructure Consortium (HALRIC) aims to be a springboard for innovation capacity in the life science sector by increasing access to and use of cross-border front-end technologies, instruments, expertise, and data-handling solutions. This includes large-scale infrastructures such as MAX IV, ESS, DESY, and European XFEL, as well as cutting-edge complementary infrastructures at universities and hospitals in the ÖKS-Hamburg region.   Through pilot projects, HALRIC facilitates collaboration between academia, hospitals, SMEs, and larger biotech and pharma companies, and we invite more research project proposals for the use of one or more research infrastructures within the HALRIC consortium.   The 21 partners in the Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak supported project aim to open the door to new techniques and methodologies that help solve research questions.
