𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐳𝐳 𝐀𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐆𝐏𝐓 𝐢𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐈 There’s no shortage of conversation about ChatGPT, but amid all the excitement, we must pay attention to the risks associated with generative AI, particularly large language models (LLMs). While LLMs have impressive capabilities, such as helping people communicate more effectively through writing, their ability to generate human-like text masks a significant flaw: they don’t truly understand the content they produce. This can lead to considerable risks, including: 1. 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: LLMs can generate inaccurate information, a phenomenon referred to as "hallucinations." This happens because these models prioritize grammatically correct sentences over factual accuracy. Imagine a customer service chatbot providing incorrect information without any way to correct it this could severely damage your brand's reputation. 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Implement explainability. Integrate LLMs with knowledge graphs that clarify data sources and allow users to verify the accuracy of the information. 2. 𝐁𝐢𝐚𝐬: LLMs are trained on vast amounts of data, which can reflect and even amplify existing social biases. If left unchecked, their outputs can reinforce harmful stereotypes and discrimination. 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Foster a culture of awareness and regular reviews. Assemble diverse, multidisciplinary teams to work on AI development, and use these reviews to identify and correct biases in the models and organizational practices. 3. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭: A significant portion of the data used to train LLMs lacks clear provenance or explicit consent. Were individuals aware their data was being used? Are there intellectual property violations at play? 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Emphasize review and accountability. Establish clear AI governance processes, ensure compliance with data privacy regulations, and provide mechanisms for individuals to understand and control how their data is used. 4. 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲: LLMs are vulnerable to malicious exploitation. Hackers could use them to spread misinformation, steal data, or promote harmful content. 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Education is key. We need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of this technology, including its potential for misuse. Train teams on responsible AI development and the security risks, as well as mitigation strategies. 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: The future of AI is bright, but caution is essential. We must promote a culture of responsible AI development that prioritizes: -𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲: Clearly communicate the limitations of LLMs and the potential for errors. -𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Define clear lines of responsibility for AI outputs and their consequences.

The Risks of AI 1-Data Privacy: AI needs a lot of data, which can raise concerns about privacy and security, especially in sensitive industries like healthcare. Are we sure all employees have the ability and understanding which data to upload into AI ?How many of us know where, to whom and to do what the data we are uploading are used? 2-Bias in Data: If the AI is trained on biased data, it could lead to poor decisions or unfair outcomes. 3-Job Displacement: AI can replace certain roles, so it’s important to reskill teams and focus on tasks where human input is essential. The challenge question is: are there any roles where AI, soon or later, will not be able to replace into the R&D landscape? 4-Overreliance on AI: AI isn’t perfect, (until so far), so we need to avoid relying on it too much and always double checking the outcome produced. Moving Forward To make the most of AI while managing the risks, we should: a) Focus on Ethical AI to ensure fair outcomes: Who is going to define it? the same group who built it ? b) Boost Security to protect data and innovation: Companies need to take such role and assure the internal effort is protected and valued without shooting information in some bots without control c)Train Teams to work alongside AI and stay update on the new technologies, opportunities and tools offered to work better, faster and nicer. d)Promote Human-AI Collaboration for the best results: it is a nice slogan, I know, but it is impossible to stop this new wave, better knows it and get the best (without forgetting the limitations and risks). AI is here to stay, and if we use it wisely, it can help us achieve incredible things in R&D (and all other fields, of course). More than half of the US’s biggest companies see artificial intelligence as a potential risk to their businesses, according to a new survey of corporate filings that highlights how the emerging technology could bring about sweeping industrial transformation. Overall, 56 per cent of Fortune 500 companies cited AI as a “risk factor” in their most recent annual reports, according to research by Arize AI, a research platform that tracks public disclosures by large businesses. The figure is a striking jump from just 9 per cent in 2022. By contrast, only 33 companies of the 108 that specifically discussed generative AI — technology capable of creating humanlike text and realistic imagery — saw it as an opportunity. Potential benefits include cost efficiencies, operational benefits and accelerating innovation, these groups said in their annual reports. More than two-thirds of that group specified generative AI as a risk. The disclosures demonstrate that the impact of generative AI is already being felt across an array of industries and at the majority of the largest listed companies in the US. The predictive machine learning technology has boomed over the past two years since OpenAI’s release of its popular chatbot ChatGPT in November 2022. Since then, Big Tech companies have invested tens of billions of dollars to develop powerful AI systems and hundreds of start-ups have launched to capitalise on the opportunity for disruption. Among Fortune 500 companies, AI risks mentioned in annual financial reports this year include greater competition, as boardrooms fret they may fail to keep pace with rivals who are better exploiting the technology. Other potential harms include reputational or operational issues, such as becoming ensnared in ethical concerns about AI’s potential impact on human rights, employment and privacy.

Sensitive information, such as confidential reports or data on specific organisational performance, might become accessible to unintended audiences if uploaded to AI systems. He cited concerns that unvetted or private data could be shared, which could affect entities’ reputation or competitive advantage. Obinna went on to share, ''Remember that AI simply uses inputted information and knowledge. It needs people more than people need it. It is a man-made advanced use of exploded information stored in spaces like Google over the years; it does not think, it only harnesses what has been externalised before by humans like you and me.'' ''In the just few months of Chat GPT usage you can see that many users are already sounding alike in their presentations and speeches with the repetition of some common terms like ‘foster, remarkable, pivotal, etc’, such that we can easily spot an AI generated script.'' Obinna also pointed out that, while technology continues to transform how we work, Comms experts and Knowledge Management professionals remain key in creating, curating, and sharing new knowledge. Understanding the Implications of AI Miscommunication 🤖 Hey there, LinkedIn family! 🌟 I recently stumbled upon a deeply concerning incident where a student communicated with Google's AI chatbot, Gemini, and received an abusive response. It’s a stark reminder of the critical issues we face with AI communication and ethics today. This isn't just a tech glitch; it's a profound learning opportunity for all of us engaged in developing and deploying AI systems. In an era where Artificial Intelligence is seamlessly integrating into our daily lives, ensuring that these systems are safe, supportive, and ethical for all users is paramount. But the question is, how do we achieve this? Let’s dive into it. 1️⃣ **Human-Centric Design** Our primary focus should always be on designing AI with a human-centric approach. This means ensuring the technology respects human values, understands diverse contexts, and reacts appropriately in varying situations. Personally, in my work on AI projects, emphasizing user empathy has always been pivotal. It involves anticipating how the AI might be interpreted and used, and keeping user safety front and center. 2️⃣ **Rigorous Testing and Feedback Loops** Before launching AI applications, robust testing is needed to uncover any potentially harmful responses. I've found that employing dynamic feedback loops where real users can interact with the system and report back helps in iteratively improving the AI’s communication style. Listening and adapting based on the feedback is key. 3️⃣ **Transparent Mechanisms** Developing transparent AI mechanisms allows users to understand why a particular response was generated. Transparency breeds trust. In my experience, collaborating across teams of diverse backgrounds adds immense value; it brings perspectives that shape a more reliable AI output. 4️⃣ **Ethical Guidelines and Policy Frameworks** Finally, we must adhere to ethical guidelines and establish strong policy frameworks. Being in tech, I’ve witnessed firsthand how essential these frameworks are in guiding acceptable AI behavior and usage. Let’s not forget that with great power comes great responsibility. Tools that don't 'think' or 'feel' anything by themselves. But wait… We spend HOURS understanding these technologies and their place in medecine and health information (see also Yesterday’s post). YES. We delve DEEP into: - the intricacies of AI functionalities - the debates surrounding ethical AI usage - numerous articles to feed our curiosity about AI impacts Understanding AI takes time, effort, and a critical mindset. ↳ and this is how we can engage with AI technologies. Do not rely on AI to 'think' for you. Do not passively consume AI-enhanced information. We must critically and creatively challenge the data AI provides. That's really not what most believe, is it? You MIGHT be inclined to fear. But: 1. AI tools are just sophisticated 'search engines' 2. Your perception of AI might be skewed 3. YOU need to consciously use AI It's not just the machine. I challenge myself to think critically and creatively. Here's a tip. The next time you worry about AI taking over, STOP what you are doing. Walk over to a thinker's space. Reflect on this. Invisible text that AI chatbots understand and humans can’t? Yep, it’s a thing. https://ift.tt/Kt8aAWb What if there was a way to sneak malicious instructions into Claude, Copilot, or other top-name AI chatbots and get confidential data out of them by using characters large language models can recognize and their human users can’t? As it turns out, there was—and in some cases still is. The invisible characters, the result of a quirk in the Unicode text encoding standard, create an ideal covert channel that can make it easier for attackers to conceal malicious payloads fed into an LLM. The hidden text can similarly obfuscate the exfiltration of passwords, financial information, or other secrets out of the same AI-powered bots. Because the hidden text can be combined with normal text, users can unwittingly paste it into prompts. The secret content can also be appended to visible text in chatbot output. The result is a steganographic framework built into the most widely used text encoding channel.
