WHERE DOES #INDIA STANDS IN THE GLOBAL #SEMICONDUCTOR #MANUFACTURING? While India is strongest in the #R&D and #design aspects of the semiconductor value chain, it aims to enhance its manufacturing capabilities, starting with the #ATMP market and moving towards semiconductor #fabrication. India has approved three new semiconductor manufacturing plants, including a semiconductor fabrication facility in Gujarat and two outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (#OSAT) facilities in Assam and Gujarat. This represents a significant step forward in India's efforts to build up its domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. However, India has yet to receive an application from a leading global #chip manufacturer to set up a full-fledged semiconductor fabrication unit in the country. The high costs and lack of a robust electronics and semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India have been barriers. India has a strong semiconductor design and research industry, and is working to develop the necessary talent pipeline by training engineers and skilled workers. But it still lacks adequate resources like raw materials, water, and energy to fully support a large-scale semiconductor manufacturing industry. The Indian government has announced incentive schemes worth over $30 billion to attract semiconductor investments, but these still lag behind the massive investments being made by the #U.S., #EU, #China, and others. Bureaucratic challenges have also made India less attractive for some semiconductor manufacturers. Overall, India is making progress but still has significant work to do to establish itself as a major global semiconductor manufacturing hub. Building a viable semiconductor #ecosystem is a long-term endeavor that will require sustained #government support, #investment, and addressing key #infrastructure and resource challenges.
