Pankaj Rai writes an interesting thread entitled, “Is technology making us dumb? The good and the bad” With the advent of technology, many argue that we have become overly dependent on smart devices and that this reliance is having a negative impact on our cognitive abilities. The question then arises, is it fair to say that our dependency on smart technologies is making us dumb? Digital technology use can have a negative impact on cognitive functioning, including attention, memory, and creativity. The excessive use of digital technology can lead to emotional problems, such as depression and anxiety. A study was conducted on a sample of 135 undergraduate students who completed surveys about their technology use and psychological well-being. The results indicated that those who reported more frequent technology use had lower levels of well-being and more negative affect. Technological advancements have become an integral part of our lives, infiltrating almost every aspect of our daily routine. From the moment we wake up, we are surrounded by technology, from our smart alarms that wake us up to our smartphones that keep us connected to the world. While it is true that technology has negative impacts on our cognitive abilities, it doesn’t necessarily mean that we should avoid it altogether. Instead, we can make good use of technology to improve our brain power and shield our brains from its negative effects. Here are a few ways in which we can leverage technology to our advantage: Use brain-training apps There are various brain-training apps available that can help improve memory, attention, and cognitive flexibility. These apps provide a fun and engaging way to challenge our brains and keep them active. Engage in online learning With the rise of online courses, we can now access a vast amount of knowledge on a variety of subjects with just a few clicks. Engaging in online learning can help keep our minds active and improve our knowledge and skills. Use technology to track our mental health There are various apps and tools available that can help us track our mental health, monitor our mood, and identify patterns in our behavior. This can help us identify areas of improvement and take steps to address any issues. Use technology to enhance creativity Technology can be used as a tool to enhance our creativity, from digital drawing tools to music production software. By leveraging technology, we can unlock new ways to express ourselves and foster creativity. In conclusion, while technology can have negative effects on our cognitive abilities, it’s not all bad news. By using technology to our advantage and adopting healthy habits, we can improve our brain power and shield our brains from its negative impacts. Accounting for Human Engagement Behavior to Enhance AI-Assisted Decision Making Ming Yin, Purdue University Human-Computer Interaction Seminar (Seminar on People, Computers, and Design) October 4, 2024, 11:30am-12:30pm PT Gates B1 https://lnkd.in/e9CNguqM Open to the public · Previous talks are online at https://hci.st/547youtube Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have been increasingly integrated into human workflows. For example, the usage of AI-based decision aids in human decision-making processes has resulted in a new paradigm of AI-assisted decision making---that is, the AI-based decision aid provides a decision recommendation to the human decision makers, while humans make the final decision. The increasing prevalence of human-AI collaborative decision making highlights the need to understand how humans engage with the AI-based decision aids in these decision-making processes, and how to promote the effectiveness of the human-AI team in decision making. In this talk, I'll discuss a few examples illustrating that when AI is used to assist humans---both an individual decision maker or a group of decision makers---in decision making, people's engagement with the AI assistance is largely subject to their heuristics and biases, rather than careful deliberation of the respective strengths and limitations of AI and themselves. I'll then describe how to enhance AI-assisted decision making by accounting for human engagement behavior in the designs of AI-based decision aids. For example, AI recommendations can be presented to decision makers in a way that promotes their appropriate reliance on AI by leveraging or mitigating human biases, informed by the analysis of human competence in decision making. Alternatively, AI-assisted decision making can be improved by developing AI models that can anticipate and adapt to the engagement behavior of human decision makers. Bio: Ming Yin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Purdue University.
