As the son of a Master Mariner, I am thrilled to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Government of Kerala, the Government of India, and Adani Ports & SEZ Ltd on the successful birthing of the first mothership, “M V San Fernando,” to arrive at India’s first transshipment port, #VizhinjamPort. The commencement of its testing phase marks a significant milestone. India’s first transshipment terminal and the largest deepwater port has begun commercial operations. The port has a total investment of around Rs 8,867 crore, with the state government and the central government allocating Rs 5,595 crore and Rs 818 crore respectively. This achievement is a testament to the collaborative efforts that have brought this ambitious project to life. Strategically located very close to the international shipping route, the port will greatly enhance India’s maritime capabilities and global trade presence. With state-of-the-art facilities and advanced automation solutions developed by IIT Chennai, Vizhinjam Port is poised to handle the largest motherships and containerships, ensuring efficient and swift operations. India enters the global map through Vizhinjam, a huge port among world ports. The biggest ships in the world can berth here. The operation is starting through a trial run and will soon be fully functional. This is becoming the mother port, and it is a proud moment. Equipped with modern equipment and advanced automation and IT systems, Vizhinjam will become India’s first semi-automated port, expected to be fully commissioned in September or October 2024. This monumental project represents a major step forward in India’s journey to becoming a global maritime powerhouse. The economic benefits from this project are expected to create numerous job opportunities and drive economic growth, benefiting Kerala's economy.
