We already have some academic assessments of OECD anti-bribery convention impact, one from Vietnam, rather depressing (The OECD convention's signatories bribed less, but the total bribes stayed the same, as other exporters stepped in to occupy the market). But stay tuned to our # Bridgegap project as Lucio Picci and his team prepare a far broader assessment on how this convention impacted (or did not) cross-border corruption. # De Jure Is not de Facto! We need to Bridge Implementation Gaps!

As many will know, this year is the 25th anniversary of the Anti-Bribery Convention, for which the #oecd serves as secretariat. The OECD created a nice video to commemorate the milestone and recognize some of the treaty's impact, here: https://lnkd.in/eTsVMnzd. (The U.S. with DOJ and SEC leadership remains a leading country for enforcement of the foreign bribery offense that the ABC focuses on, https://lnkd.in/em7TmbAE) Only the Inter-American Convention against Corruption, https://lnkd.in/eEmRUjF7, predates the ABC. The Council of Europe treaties arrived shortly thereafter, https://lnkd.in/eSpkseta, along with #uncac, the global anticorruption convention that entered into force in 2005. Together, the conventions (along with important frameworks such as FATF, the AU convention, OGP, EITI, etc) create an ecosystem of obligations and expectations for good governance and action to prevent and combat graft. #corruption #anticorruption #bribery #antibribery #criminallaw #internationallaw #treaty #convention #criminaljustice #fcpa #internationalrelations #foreignpolicy #foreignaffairs

Well done, and hopefully the national civil societies will increase demand for implementation from more countries! Follow on corruptiondata.eu to see how great implementation gaps exist on this indicator! Happy New Year!
