I was extremely anxious when I joined Ambak last month. It was very tough for me to transition from co-founder of a bootstrapped startup to the founders office role in a Peak XV Partners backed startup. My first few days were full of anxiety as I was a complete novice to the industry in which we are working. Joining a new workplace came with its own challenges: ✅ I was really anxious and still am as I really want to prove my worth to the organisation ✅ It was tough to transition from CEO to founders office, it was like transitioning from brain to muscle ✅ Everyday seemed like a new day with a new challenge and the first month was very exciting in that aspect ✅ Somedays I ran faster other days the organisation so the toughest part for me was to match our tempo Now that it has already been a month I have settled in nicely and I would be able to talk more about what I do. When you work at a startup in their nascent stage, you really want to create an impact. I am here to engage, activate and retain business which will give us substantial results in the long run. Once, I found myself as the #founder of a #startup. It wasn’t something I’d planned, but I decided to go with it. I remember the challenges of trying to invent solutions without experience and the uncertainty of what to do next. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one in this position. There are countless young founders (young in experience, not necessarily age) lying awake at night, worrying about their creations. A lot of things are glamourised online... The one I personally find the most amusing is how building startups are glamourised 😅 There is not a lot of glam to 👇 - sleepless nights - uncertainty - limited resources & team & my personal favourite - telling people all about your startup, with SO much passionate & excitement for them to then respond, what's it called again?? Having said that, when you see your little seed of an idea actually blossom, launch & make a difference in people's lives - nothing really compares. I love my job! I have since 1995. (Well, after the first 3-6 months which were hell!). Why do I love it so much? I love meeting new people, which I get to do every day. I get to speak with great people. Interesting people. Hear fascinating stories. But what I most love about working in the startup and scale-up world is that everyone wants to help. They are all so passionate about what they do. They are very positive, humble, and committed. For every event I attend I am surrounded by people with all the above. On the other side of conquering your fears is unimaginable greatness. Our 6 and 8 year old rode their first upside down rollercoaster this weekend (not the one in the video 🤣) and learned SO MUCH about what they’re capable of. The look of accomplishment and joy they had (after they stopped laughing from how much fun they had) was truly priceless. I work very hard to build up their CAPABILITIES rather than doing hard things for them. They conquered a HUGE fear and now have a significantly greater understanding of courage and capability. It was their choice (with a lot of coaxing, sure) meaning they owned the outcomes. I don’t know what they’ll conquer next… but I know they’ll have a huge win and enormously more confidence when it comes. I reminded them as we waited in line, courage isn’t the absence of fear - it’s facing it head on. What is holding you back from conquering the fears in your life right now? Five years at DealShare - what a journey it has been! As I reflect on this milestone, I am filled with gratitude for the challenges and rewards that have shaped my experience in the startup world. If you’re stuck in short term thinking (especially at a startup), here’s some perspective that might help you too: 👉 As a company: - Most of your customers haven’t signed up yet. - Most of your coworkers don’t work at your company yet. - Most of your product isn’t built yet. 👉 As a person: - Most of what you will know, you haven’t learned yet. - Most of your best ideas, you haven’t had yet. All of these can be true, and you can still have a great company and career today. BUT every day you have an opportunity to make progress on at least one of these. You can get pretty far and build some great things if you believe the best stuff hasn’t happened yet. When I get stuck, this perspective is one way I reset. Maybe it helps a few of you too. #startups
