Today, our family lost our beloved Anne Donovan. She was beautiful, she was brilliant, and we will miss her terribly. Aunt Annie had an extraordinary career, one that her 45 nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews have always admired. She rose to incredible heights in Massachusetts political circles before being tapped to bring her talents to the state of Florida. After her time in Tallahassee, she served on the Millennium Council in the Clinton Administration, working alongside Hillary Clinton. She capped her career at Jones Day in their Washington, DC, office, serving as the Office Manager for BD&C, Community and Civic Relations. In 2008, I was still working in advertising for Boston Globe Media. It was an open primary year, and every major candidate came to seek the Editorial Board’s endorsement. On the day Hillary Clinton visited, I made my way to the newsroom from the advertising department and, somewhat boldly, muscled my way to the front of a gaggle of reporters, including Brian McGrory, Joan Venocchi, our editor, Marty Baron, and probably even my friend, Scott Kirsner. I called out, “Excuse me, Senator. My name is Andy Donovan, and I grew up here in Dorchester. I am Annie’s nephew.” The former First Lady, current Senator from NY, and future Secretary of State stopped what she was doing, took both of my hands, and gave me a warm hug. “Your aunt is a wonderful woman,” she told me. We exchanged a few more sentiments before she returned to her purpose. What always struck me about that moment wasn’t just that Hillary Clinton knew who Annie was—it was that she understood her essence. Annie was a wonderful, remarkable, and extraordinary woman. We will miss you, Aunt Annie. https://lnkd.in/dp6Gh6Fa
