Corporate innovation isn't an exact science but there are certainly playbooks that can be adapted and tweaked to each organisation. Are Startup Studios about to replace Venture Capital? Is the meteoric arrival and maturity of the Venture Studio model accelerating the VC extinction? Venture studios could become the new industry standard in the years ahead, replacing the contemporary VC at the top of the innovation food chain. Significant inefficiencies, including high failure rates and resource-intensive fundraising processes, sow the seeds of extinction. This is the thesis by John Cowan. ⏩ Current research suggests the average failure rate for seed-stage startups is 86%. ⏩ To counteract that statistic, traditional VCs spread their investments across a broad portfolio, hoping for a few successes to offset the many failures. This high-risk approach is inherently inefficient and results in substantial resource wastage. This is the "Power Law" investing thesis, where VCs exclusively aim to find and fund unicorns. This approach leads to irrational valuations and a lack of genuine innovation as firms focus on scaling a few high-potential companies at the expense of broader, more sustainable growth. ⏩ A venture studio is an organization that creates startups internally or works with early-stage projects to develop them into successful companies systematically. According to Pitchbook, VC firms are expected to raise less than $200 billion in 2024—a staggering 48% drop from 2021 levels. The Venture Capital Journal reports a sharp decline in Limited Partners (LPs) interested in VC investments, falling to just 30%. As traditional VC approaches falter, a new model is gaining momentum: the Venture Studio. These studios are reshaping the startup landscape by systematically building and scaling companies internally. The Venture Studio model has several advantages: 🔹 A 44% improvement in company success rates 🔹 Reduced time to raise growth funding 🔹 An average internal rate of return (IRR) of 53%, compared to 21.3% for traditional VCs Venture studios like Atomic, Human Ventures, and Science Inc. are proving the power of this hands-on, deeply involved approach. Since the last few months, I have been researching and reading about a new model in the VC business. Yes, there is a term that has been gaining prominence across the world of VCs and startups - "A venture studio". So, what is a venture studio, and how does it differ from the typical VC business? Well, it is an organization that routinely creates startups, typically from the ground up. It generates and tests ideas, invests money, allocates resources and the studio team among various projects, and attracts co-founder entrepreneurs to create startups. The studio usually retains a 20-40% stake in each company, sometimes more, rarely less. In a nutshell, while traditional venture capital firms typically provide funding to existing startups in exchange for equity, venture studios take a more hands-on approach to company creation. Here's how it works: ➡️Company Creation: Instead of solely investing in existing startups, venture studios actively conceive, build, and launch their own companies from scratch. They usually have a team of entrepreneurs, engineers, designers, and business professionals in-house who work together to develop and launch new ventures. ➡️Resource Pooling: Venture studios often have a shared pool of resources, including talent, capital, office space, and operational support. This shared infrastructure helps reduce costs and allows for greater efficiency in building multiple companies simultaneously. ➡️Iterative Process: Venture studios typically follow an iterative process of ideation, validation, and scaling. They rapidly prototype and test multiple business ideas, quickly discarding ones that don't gain traction and doubling down on those that show promise. ➡️Long-Term Support: Unlike traditional VC firms that may provide funding and then take a more hands-off approach, venture studios typically provide ongoing support and guidance to the companies they create. This can include strategic advice, operational assistance, and access to their network of investors and mentors. ➡️Alignment of Incentives: Since venture studios have a vested interest in the success of the companies they create, their incentives are often more closely aligned with those of the founders. This can lead to a stronger partnership and a greater focus on building sustainable, long-term businesses. Well, "Venture Studios" are here to stay and I believe that with the deployment of the "Venture Studio" model, more and more innovative ideas will be shaped and brought to life. P.S. "To really drive change in venture, we need to start with ownership.” That sentiment was top of mind when Jennifer Keiser Neundorfer co-founded January Ventures nearly seven years ago with her partner Maren Bannon. After earning a BA from Harvard and an MBA from Stanford, Jen’s early career was notable for her success as an operator, launching digital ventures and businesses at 21st Century Fox and YouTube. Drawn by the desire to build early-stage companies, she left big business to focus on the thrill of taking new ideas and technologies from 0 to 1. Jen was also seeing, first hand, the closed-loop cycle of venture capital: the same VCs were investing in the same types of founders, building wealth for the same small circles, and leaving a lot of value on the table. “For an industry obsessed with innovation, there’s been surprisingly little of it.” “January” is about changing that. It’s the start of the year, where the fund invests in the earliest stages of tech startups with the potential to define categories. It’s also the start of new patterns with today’s outlier founders redefining what it means to be a successful founder.  “With a certain pedigree, network or geography,” Jen notes, “it is easy to unlock capital. If not, it can be nearly impossible—even for the highest potential founders with the best ideas.”  Only 11% of venture partners are women, and 75% of VC firms have no female investing partner. Little wonder that only 2% of VC dollars flow to female founders (a number that is even lower for women of color). January Ventures democratizes access to financial, social, and emotional capital, runs a fellowship program, shares data on founders, and offers advice through Jen’s podcast, Beyond the Cap Table. Jen credits her rise to a Cuban immigrant mom whose family had to start their lives over in New York when she was 9. Her mom’s relentless work ethic and immense gratitude—combined with her management consultant father’s teachings on listening hard and always seeking feedback—shaped Jen’s high ambitions, “working like crazy to get there and taking nothing for granted.”  Today, Jen mentors founders at TechStars and SomosVC, and describes January Ventures as running on “the brains and grit of founders out there who are dreaming big, taking huge risks, and working tirelessly to create something out of nothing."
