GESTATIONAL DIABETES Gestational diabetes (GDM) is a serious condition diagnosed during pregnancy GDM can lead to increased risk of long term maternal issues such as * Type 2 Diabetes * Metabolic syndrome * Cardiovascular, kidney, liver and retinal disease The great news is that GDM is extremely responsive to lifestyle management in the form of diet and exercise! Exercise allows for an alternate pathway for pathway for glucose to enter your cells, lowering blood sugar, leading to less risk of complications arising from GDM! So what exercise is best? Studies show that no matter the mode of exercise - all forms of exercise can help to lower blood glucose! Sticking to moderate intensity for a minimum of 30-60 minutes 3x per week is the current recommendations for those with GDM. Kara Willette, APRN talks about gestational diabetes: Gestational diabetes during pregnancy is due to either insufficient insulin production or an increased insulin resistance caused by hormones from the placenta. Most often, it is managed through lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. If this is ineffective, medication and insulin might be needed to manage it more effectively. Monitoring blood sugar levels regularly also helps to keep blood sugars within normal limits. Uncontrolled blood sugar can lead to complications for both the mother and the baby. Our team of experts monitor our patients carefully throughout their pregnancy. Generally, our patients are screened for gestational diabetes at 28 weeks but may be screened sooner if certain risk factors exist. I am still hopeful the Seraph 100 whole blood purification treatment will be tried for Preeclampsia someday since it is good at removing nucleosomes it may also be good at removing prothrombotic NETs. NETs are significant cardiovascular risk factors in addition to a suspected cause of placental ischemia. The Seraph 100 treatment would likely be safer and more effective than prescribing aspirin which can cause excessive bleeding. There is an increased #cardiovascular risk after a pregnant woman has #preeclampsia. Previous research found that there are signs of early cardiovascular aging when a woman is six months postpartum. This study looked at women when they were six months postpartum and again two years postpartum to look at their cardiovascular measures and ongoing risk factors. This study found that women who had preeclampsia had higher blood pressure and were more likely to have signs of future cardiovascular problems compared to women who didn't have preeclampsia during pregnancy. The women who had preeclampsia also had a higher body mass index and insulin resistance, which also increased their future cardiovascular risk. TAKE HOME MESSAGE: The study suggests that doctors should keep a close eye on these women even after their pregnancy is over to help prevent cardiovascular diseases and other complications. Women who experienced preeclampsia can talk to their doctors about steps they can take to reduce their cardiovascular risks.
