No, you don't need a website. It's unfortunate to see that the term website has become synonymous with either a pretty looking online brochure or worse, generalised (or crappy) set of templates filled with content for the sake of it. When it comes to the design (structure or flow), these sites look like a pile of Jenga blocks stacked in a haphazard fashion - ready to fall apart on the next move. No thought is given to the user flow, the user experience and even the content. "We sell the world's best this and that" claim most of these sites and even if they do have great products or services, their website turns potential customers away. I'm sure that most of us have come across at least one of these sites in the past week or so. So, why is it so common? Yes, the industry practices are to be blamed and so are inexperienced designers & developers. But more importantly, it's the lack of understanding among business owners and other key stakeholders of what a website is or is meant to do. A great website is actually a (set of) system(s) that helps a business achieve their sales, marketing, operational, customer service, financial, r&d and everything in between goals. Stop redesigning your website just for the heck of it. And, start designing with purpose, strategy, and your audience in mind. You don't need: → A shiny, expensive design that looks great but doesn’t convert. → A complete overhaul without understanding what works and what doesn’t. → Endless pages or flashy features that confuse your users. → A redesign driven solely by “we need a refresh.” What you DO need is clarity, simplicity, and an analytical approach. You can start making this happen by adopting these strategies: 1. Redesign with a clear purpose Start with why. - Is your current tech stack outdated or causing performance issues? - Are there UX challenges frustrating users? - Have you outgrown the functionality your tech stack offers? Define clear objectives before you touch a single line of code. 2. Pay attention to your conversion data Carry forward the lessons from your current site. - Review your current conversion rate. - Analyze any A/B testing or CRO efforts you've done. - Bring forward the "winning" elements that drive conversions. Remember: Fancy doesn’t always mean functional. Some of the ugliest sites convert the best because they’re simple and intuitive. 3. Simplify the user journey Humans crave clarity. Every click, scroll, or tap should guide them toward the next logical step. Think: - Clear CTAs - Intuitive navigation - Minimal distractions 4. Test before launch - Run usability tests with real users. - Check for device responsiveness. - Ensure loading times are lightning-fast (SEO loves this too). Redesigns shouldn't be based purely on aesthetics. They should focus on how your website works and converts. Before you pull the trigger on a redesign, ask the hard questions, respect your data, and remember that sometimes, simpler really is better. What’s your biggest frustration (or success) when redesigning a website?
