Clinical laboratories play a critical role in stopping the spread of measles. Whether it's NAAT tests to rapidly assess for infection and differentiate wild-type from vaccine strain measles viruses or serology assays to look for evidence of prior infection or vaccination. It was my pleasure to speak with members of the media today and share the important work we do every day to help combat infectious diseases.
Leading pathologists (Donald Karcher, MD, FCAP & Ben Bradley, MD, PhD, FCAP) from the College of American Pathologists (CAP) briefed members of the media on factors driving the current measles outbreak and why the disease can be deadly for some patients. Amid a nationwide surge in measles cases, pathologists and clinical laboratories are at the forefront, ensuring rapid and accurate diagnoses to inform public health responses. https://lnkd.in/gDVCwC7z

1wWhat’s actually deadly is social media, in particular Meta and the recent retraction of regulatory measures around false information. One of the groups I observe consistently has parents posting about unvaxxed neurodivergent children (ages 1-10) who they are feeding veterinary grade horse paste and “detoxing”. It’s terrifying.
