Very helpful article from BoardSource! My key takeaway: not every board member will be able to give the same size gift. Organizations need to remember that not every board director has the financial capacity to give the same size gift, and if they do, maybe the board isn't diverse enough. Diversity isn't only important when it comes to race, gender, and age -- but class too! If everyone on your board can afford to give $X amount or more (and then some for special events and campaigns) then your board may be missing representation of a different kind. As someone who grew up in a low-income household and is currently tackling the aftermath (debt, scarcity mindset, etc.), I believe that in order to have true diversity, equity, and inclusion on a nonprofit board, the governance committee along with leadership should consider recruiting more young people like me -- who maybe don't have the means -- but they have the heart. What do you think? #passionateforgood #drivenforimpact #skilledinfundraising #boardgovernance #nonprofitsector

Fundraising is not just the responsibility of the development team—it’s a collective effort. The board plays a pivotal role in setting the tone, building relationships, and leading by example. Their commitment and involvement directly influence the success and impact of the organization’s fundraising initiatives. That’s why I always encourage my nonprofit friends to 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐲—one where fundraising is seen as the shared responsibility of the entire team, including board members, staff, and volunteers. When everyone is engaged and aligned, the organization’s development strategy becomes stronger, more sustainable, and ultimately more successful. A strong development strategy thrives on collaboration. When the board, leadership, and staff work together, everyone takes ownership, and the collective impact is far greater. This is the foundation of a thriving nonprofit. How has your experience been with board member involvement in fundraising at your nonprofit? I’d love to hear your thoughts and stories—whether it's challenges you've faced, successes you've celebrated, or lessons learned along the way. Your insights could help myself and others build more effective, collaborative development strategies. Thanks for sharing the article, Carol Buckheit, CFRE!
