‘Pig butchering’ trading apps found on Google Play, App Store Fake trading apps on Google Play and Apple's App Store lure victims into “pig butchering” scams that have a global reach. The apps have been removed from the official Android and iOS stores after accumulating several thousand downloads, say researcher at cybersecurity company Group-IB, who discovered the fraud. Pig butchering is the name of a scam where the victim is led to believe they are getting high investment returns on a fake trading platform that displays fabricated information. Fraudsters use social engineering to keep the victim depositing funds and prevent them from withdrawing the displayed "profit." These so-called "too good to be true" offers are often fake trading apps, many of which are available on the Apple and Google App Stores. 🚨 Fake Trading Apps Target Victims Globally via Apple App Store and Google Play🚨 A large-scale fraud campaign leveraged fake trading apps published on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, as well as phishing sites, to defraud victims, per findings from Group-IB. The campaign is part of a consumer investment fraud scheme that's also widely known as pig butchering, in which prospective victims are lured into making investments in cryptocurrency or other financial instruments after gaining their trust under the guise of a romantic relationship or an investment advisor. Such manipulative and social engineering operations often end with the victims losing their funds, and in some cases, extracting even more money from them by requesting various fees and other payments. The Singapore-headquartered company said the campaign has a global reach, with victims reported across Asia-Pacific, European, Middle East and Africa. The bogus apps, built using the UniApp Framework, have been classified under the moniker UniShadowTrade. Cybercriminals are leveraging fake trading apps to target users globally via the Apple App Store and Google Play. These malicious apps lure victims with promises of quick profits but instead steal sensitive financial data, putting your investments and personal information at risk.
