AI fears and hopes? AI might be the most polarizing new technology ever in terms of the fear vs hope it has inspired PRIOR to major adoption. (Social media has been very controversial but it wasn’t quite this provocative back in 2007 when it was just starting with early adopters.) From Perplexity (AI-powered web search): Comparing the public's perception of AI to other historical innovations like social media, the Internet, TV, and cars reveals both similarities and differences in the balance of fear and hope they inspire. ### AI - **Hope**: Seen as intelligent, useful, and effective, with potential benefits in various fields like healthcare and education[1]. - **Fear**: Concerns about job displacement, ethical implications, and misuse by bad actors[2]. ### Social Media - **Hope**: Enhanced connectivity, information sharing, and marketing opportunities[3]. - **Fear**: Misinformation, privacy issues, and social isolation[2]. ### Internet - **Hope**: Revolutionized access to information, communication, and commerce[5]. - **Fear**: Cybersecurity threats, digital divide, and misinformation[2]. ### TV - **Hope**: Entertainment, education, and mass communication. - **Fear**: Concerns about content quality, influence on behavior, and reduced physical activity. ### Cars - **Hope**: Mobility, economic growth, and convenience. - **Fear**: Environmental impact, accidents, and urban sprawl. Overall, each innovation has inspired a mix of optimism and concern, shaped by its societal impact and the context of its adoption.
