Five Insights from "Investing in U.S. Financial History"

"An investment in knowledge pays the best interest."
-BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

The quote from Benjamin Franklin captures what I hope my recently released book provides to those who invest their time in reading it. The image below captures just a small section of my basement, which is still lined with more than 3,000 notecards documenting the financial history of the United States from 1790 to 2023. I just can't bring myself to take them down—maybe one day I will.
The link below is to an article written by my colleague, Murray Coleman. To be clear because he is a colleague—and this is no disparagement on his integrity—the review cannot be considered unbiased. Nevertheless, I do think that the five key insights are worthy of your time. I have listed each below.

KEY INSIGHTS FROM INVESTING IN U.S. FINANCIAL HISTORY
💡 Normalizing the Occurrence of 'Extreme' Market Events
💡 Appreciation of the Bi-Polar Peril of Price Instability
💡 Understanding the Value and Purpose of the Public Credit
💡 Respecting the Dreadful Odds of Active Management
💡 Recognizing the Long-Wave Cycles of Alternative Asset Classes
About a year ago, I met Muitheri Wahome, who coincidentally spent the prior six years writing the history of the asset management industry in South Africa. We talked for about an hour and swapped stories about our process and insights. In the end, we both agreed that the greatest benefit of our work was the calming force that knowledge of the past provides during inevitable periods of market turmoil.
The famed stock operator, Jesse Livermore, once said, "There is nothing new in Wall Street. There can’t be because speculation is as old as the hills. Whatever happens in the stock market today has happened before and will happen again."
The more you understand what has happened, the less frightened you will be about what is happening, and what may happen in the future.
