Productivity. It can be a helpful yardstick when it comes to measuring improvements to NHS staffing. But when I ask my colleagues what it means to them, especially in the context of "workforce productivity," I rarely get the same answer back. For some, it’s the number of new recruits on the wards. For others, it’s the rates of retention. And elsewhere, it’s factors such as the number of agency staff being deployed, reducing operational inefficiencies, or the scale of current staffing gaps. “Productivity” as a catch-all measure can be a useful marker for the direction of progress as we tackle NHS workforce pressures. But we mustn't forget to look closer at the more nuanced, individual factors at play. So let's get specific. What does "workforce productivity" in NHS staffing look like to you?
