New from CSPS 💲 The FY 2025 Defense Space Budget Brief: Continued Emphasis on Proliferation Under a More Constrained Top-Line This year’s budget cycle has been unusual, with significant consequences for the young United States Space Force. This is the fifth budget submission since the establishment of the Space Force and, over that period, the service’s budget has nearly doubled. However, this request is the first in which the amount fell from the prior year. Robert (Sam) Wilson breaks down the FY 2025 budget submission, which reflects the United States Department of Defense's continued emphasis on the transition to a new model for defense space operations. In coming years, the Space Force will likely take additional steps toward a more distributed and proliferated approach for defense space capabilities. 🔗 Read the full brief here: https://lnkd.in/eQRkCBgK #SpacePolicy #NatSecSpace #SpaceForce

🚀 Is Space Force's "Resilience" Strategy Enough for Orbital Defense? New CSPS analysis reveals challenges in the FY 2025 Defense Space Budget. With a constrained top-line, the focus is on proliferation and commercial partnerships. But is this enough? Key points: a) $29.6 billion requested for Space Force (3.5% of DoD budget) b) Emphasis on distributed, resilient space capabilities c) Integration of commercial satellite services d) Debate: "Brown Waters" vs "Blue Waters" space strategy Is resilience truly deterrence? The space domain needs a credible offensive counterforce capability to ensure robust defense. What's your take on the future of space defense strategy? For the next edition of our debate series, Thomas González Roberts and Benjamin Staats address whether sustained space maneuver (SSM) should be an essential warfighting principle for the U.S. Space Force - given the increasing competition and emerging threats in space. The authors debate how important SSM is to the goals of DOD space leadership, and how it will require continued analysis of the current and future state of the space environment. 📰 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/eyUPcZct The CSPS debate series highlights national security space debates with arguments from two analysts external to The Aerospace Corporation. The U.S. Defense Department has published it’s newest update to the document that assigns roles and missions to both the Space Force chief and the commander of US Space Command, with language that should plump up each of their influence with respect to joint force activities. In particular, the new version of “DoD Directive 3100.10” — dated Oct. 15 and signed by DoD Deputy Secretary Kathleen Hicks — for the first time codifies into Pentagon policy the three primary missions for which Space Force Guardians must be organised, trained and equipped to fulfill: (1) Provide freedom of operation for the United States in, from, and to space. (2) Conduct space operations. (3) Protect U.S. interests in space.

As the commercial and military space sectors continue their rapid growth, the Space Force is planning to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to upgrade its launch facilities—and will consider expanding to other locations, a top general said May 21. Such moves are necessary because the U.S. military’s launch infrastructure and workforce has not kept pace with the increasing number of launches themselves, Space Systems Command boss Lt. Gen. Philip A. Garrant said during a Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies event. Space Systems Command oversees the service’s acquisition and launches. In 2024, the Space Force’s two launch deltas—Space Launch Delta 30 and Space Launch Delta 45—will host 174 launches from its two “ranges” at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Fla., and Vandenberg Space Force Base, Calif., Garrant said. Yet, “the launch deltas are manned at a 2017 manning rate based on a 2017 launch assessment. We’re launching a lot more missions seven years later, yet we’re still manned as if we were doing dozens, not hundreds.” In 2017, Cape Canaveral hosted seven launches, while Vandenberg hosted nine. In budget documents, the Space Force is projecting that it will support 192 launches—a 1,100 percent increase in eight years. Manning isn’t the only issue. Garrant said the infrastructure and technology at Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg are old and need investment to bring the facilities up to modern standards, to say nothing of future capabilities. #SSC #SpaceForce #SpaceLaunchDeltas

Effective deterrence on Earth demands dynamic parity on orbit!
Director of Strategy and Strategic Communications , CORE-CSI/ Leader-Commander-Strategist -Air National Guard
Well ...it's about time. I hope these are the type we need, both kinetic and non kinetic, capable of winning real space superiority, not the terrestrial support focused attempt at redefining the Space Force rolled out earlier this year. This should be the top priority for a combatant command. Hopefully it gets funded rapidly. National Institute for Deterrence Studies https://lnkd.in/eN8MQPjk

How are the United States Department of Defense and United States Space Force transforming security? The 2024 U.S. DoD and Space Force commercial #space strategies build on a longstanding tradition of harnessing #privatesector #innovation and efficiency. These strategies emphasize #resilience and prioritize #outsourcing to the private sector in mission areas where it is most effective. Looking ahead to 2025, Ted Richard anticipates that the U.S. DoD will continue advocating for commercial solutions, further integrating commercial space capabilities into the U.S. #nationalsecurity framework. "The Space Force budget will probably have to double again in the next five years to effectively implement the Joint Warfighting Concept, protect U.S. interests and freedom of action in space, and begin to address the challenges coming in lunar space. The question, of course, is whether the Space Force’s 2026 request will reflect that need." Gen (Ret) D.T. Thompson provides perspective on the United States Department of Defense 2025 Budget Request in this op-ed published today on The Hill Read more at the link below! #elaranova #elaraedge #thoughtleadership #subjectmatterexpert #spaceindustry #nationalsecurityspace #spacesecurity #DOD #defenseindustry #Pentagon #SpaceForce #USSF #nationalsecurity #nationaldefense #AirForce #USAF
