𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲! 💛 💙 Today is an important day in my life. As well as it being my Mum’s birthday, it is also World Down Syndrome Day, a day to celebrate the brilliance, resilience, and joy that people with Down Syndrome bring to the world. It is a day to celebrate the Down Syndrome Community and to encourage positivity kindness and inclusion. It is a day to celebrate my son Alfie. Since he was born, Alfie has been a constant source of strength and inspiration for me. But above all this, his sense of fun, love, his caring nature and constant sense of fun is infectious. Don’t get me wrong, like all children he is not happy all the time (especially when on chemo!) but there is magic in him, something everyone who knows him will agree with. In business and motivational content you see on here everyone talks about the importance of Resilience. To me, Alfie is the personification of resilience. He has had to work harder to learn things, fallen down twice as much as a typical child when learning to walk, and got up on his feet more times. He’s then had to do it all over again when Leukemia took it away from him. And he has succeeded.  He’s overcome paralysed vocal cords and Christmas in intensive care and now says ‘Thank you Daddy’ when I get him something. And he has done it all without losing his sense of fun, or ability to make everyone around him smile when he is with them. Of course, when you are a parent of a child with DS you worry about the future and what the world will be like for him. That’s why we don’t want to change our child to fit the world but change the World so that our children can excel in it. We know they can. Its why it’s so important that employers look at ways of providing opportunities for people with Down Syndrome. You’ll see many job adverts wanting people that are:  • Good at overcoming challenges • Are resilient  • Have a positive attitude  • A good team player Sounds like the characteristics of many people with Down Syndrome to me. Maybe we should think differently. Big love to everyone in the DS community today and everyone who came before us. Let’s keep showing that there are no limits!
