Flexential CEO Chris Downie highlights the increasing importance of network connectivity within and between data centers, driven by AI and GPU demands. He warns that network resources, especially dark fiber, may become scarce, paralleling the current scarcity in data center resources. This trend could lead to higher prices and necessitate additional investments in fiber infrastructure to meet the growing demand. As data centers expand, particularly in secondary markets, network alignment will be critical to avoid bottlenecks and ensure efficient operations. Land, power, and now networks - the trifecta of critical resources for data centers according to Flexential CEO Chris Downie. With over 20 years in the industry and 42 data center facilities across 19 U.S. markets, Flexential's strategic focus on emerging locations is reshaping the landscape. Historically seen as "secondary" markets, areas like Denver, Las Vegas, and Salt Lake City are gaining popularity for their accessibility to land and power. As artificial intelligence and GPUs boost demand for networking power within data centers, Downie's forward-looking approach is centered on the implications for network demand between facilities. The shift in resource prioritization is a key consideration for the future of data center operations. #DataCenters #Networking #AI #Flexential https://lnkd.in/eKvWFxY7

In a recent trial in Boston, Verizon moved 1.6 Tb/s of data in its live fiber network on a single-carrier wavelength using Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) coherent optical solution. “AI is contingent on analyzing billions of data points in real-time on an ongoing basis. Because of the massive, multi-year transformation on Verizon’s network including deploying cloud native architecture from the core to the edge, deploying massive amounts of high-performing spectrum, exponentially increasing the capacity of our fiber infrastructure and deploying advanced technologies and intelligence throughout the network, Verizon’s network provides the ability to power the processes and movements of AI-generated activity,” - Adam Koeppe SVP of Technology Strategy and Planning at Verizon. #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #TerabitTransport #EdgePerformance #5G #BusinessContinuity #VTeam

Get ready for a shift in network dynamics! The landscape of network modernization is on the brink of transformation as artificial intelligence progresses from model training to inference. While the focus has primarily been on data center network performance and expansion with customers gobbling up as many GPUs as they can, the spotlight will start to shift towards the increasing significance of Wide Area Networks (WAN). Recent events, like the #DeepSeek tremor, (although not as newsworthy to the Silicon Valley ilk) have hinted at the imminent transition towards agentic AI and software to improve performance, efficiency and adoption. Future applications will revolve around AI-driven workflows that are multi-task, multi-agent, multi-LLM and geographically dispersed, relying on various entities to host/ manage #LLMs, #Agents, and orchestrators/controllers. This evolution will highlight the critical role of private Enterprise WAN and Service Provider networks in transporting this AI workload traffic as they will be ultra-sensitive to the impact latency and packet loss will have on AI workflow efficiency. As these intricate workflows traverse the network, the synchronization of agent processes will be paramount, with agents interdependent and reliant on each other's outputs. This stacking of latency budgets will pave the way for AI network infrastructure readiness with modernized infrastructure, highly precise, granular and near real time network assurance and AI-powered network automation to ensure optimal performance. #Cisco is poised to build upon its data center network leadership as a key beneficiary in this demand transition from DC to WAN, offering industry-leading routing, automation, and assurance solutions to meet the escalating demand for highly performant networks.
