United Airlines faces significant financial turbulence, reporting a $200 million loss attributed to the grounding of its Boeing 737 MAX 9 fleet for three weeks in January. Despite this, United's first-quarter revenue rose nearly 10% to $12.54 billion, with capacity up over 9%. However, the airline has had to adjust its long-term fleet strategy, receiving fewer narrow-body planes in 2024 and opting to lease Airbus A321neos to offset delays. United Airlines dropped its 10-Q for the first quarter that includes the significant orderbook changes the airline has made in response to the Boeing 737 Max 10 delays. United converted 110 (!!) Max 10s to Max 9s. Firm commitments for each type stood at 167 and 144, respectively, at the end of March. The letters of intent that United has signed with lessors for 35 Airbus A321neos with CFM International engines due in 2025-26 are not reflected in its fleet plan yet. In total, United expects roughly 100 narrowbody aircraft deliveries (A321neo, Max 8, and Max 9) annually from 2025-27, Chief Financial Officer Mike Leskinen said Wednesday. The airline will take 61 narrowbodies this year, significantly less than the contractual 183 planes. #airlines

The Ripple Effect: How Boeing Production Delays Are Costing Airlines It is no secret that Boeing is being hit by a series of massive scandals related to cutting corners in producing its Boeing 737 MAX family of aircraft. The FAA has stated that Boeing can not increase 737 MAX production until quality issues are addressed. Boeing is now reporting a 36% decline in quarterly aircraft deliveries. As the airliner industry is dominated by a duopoly of two manufacturers (Boeing and Airbus), disruptions in either of these companies have massive effects on the wider industry. Everyone talks about Boeing, but the Pratt & Whitney problems also seem to be continuing. Wizz Air CEO Jozsef Varadi stated that issues with Pratt & Whitney engines, which have grounded some of the airline’s planes, are expected to last four to five years. Initially, the airline anticipated a shorter timeline of 18 months to two years, but the situation has proven to be more prolonged. Wizz Air expects 40 planes to remain grounded until fiscal year 2026 due to engine problems. The issue also affects other airlines, such as AirBaltic, which has noted that the delays limit its growth.
