Last week, we had one of our Rarekind conferences, where the company brings all of our offices together. A big part of this conference was discussing the results from our recent employee survey that we do biannually. One section of the survey that always stands out to me is where employees are asked if they genuinely feel supported by their manager and believe their manager cares about their wellbeing. It consistently scores close to 100%! How amazing is that? 💯 According to recent research in Forbes UK, workplace managers actually have more influence on mental health than even therapists (!). For many of us, our boss is one of the three most impactful people in our lives. It just shows how crucial it is for leaders to be human-centric and really care about their teams. I’m so grateful to have such a great manager (shout out Tegan Winters). 🤝 Great leadership doesn’t just impact work—it impacts lives. A workplace that invests in developing awesome managers can create such an invaluable flow on affect throughout companies, just like it has at Rarekind. Mental health issues can have a significant impact on businesses, leading to decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, and higher turnover rates among employees. Implementing strategies to support mental well-being, such as providing access to mental health resources and promoting a healthy work-life balance, can help mitigate these negative effects and create a more productive and sustainable work environment.
Effective #leadership is about having tough conversations, everyday. And I’m not talking about conversations around #performancemanagement. Those can be the easier ones. But the personal conversations, the ones where you need to put yourself in the shoes of colleagues and coworkers and empathically address their personal concerns, expectations, fears, worries and aspirations. Those are the tough ones. Managers must hone the skills of actively listening, showing #compassion and treading the balance between putting people first and keeping the #businessgoals aligned. #Managers who don’t have the right skills to have these conversations can cause long term workplace injuries that may cause psychological harm to both people and the organization. When we prioritize people over tasks, we create environments where teams feel valued, empowered, and inspired to perform at their best. Employees who feel supported in their mental health are 𝟓 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐲 to stay with their employer for at least two years? Let that sink in. Here’s how we can put people first as leaders: 1️⃣ Promote Open Dialogue ➮ Encourage conversations about mental health and well-being to reduce stigma and show genuine care. 2️⃣ Set Realistic Expectations ➮ Prevent burnout by setting achievable goals and offering flexibility. 3️⃣ Provide Resources for Support ➮ Invest in wellness programs, mental health days, or employee assistance programs. 4️⃣ Celebrate the Whole Person ➮ Acknowledge achievements inside and outside of work, recognizing that your team is made up of individuals with lives beyond the office.
